In fact, I'm not talking about any television or virtual television finale in general. I'm talking about THIS BLOG!

That's right. After some serious thinking I've come to a decision to finally wrap it up, and let the blog go out with sort of a bang, rather than to just have it quietly fall into the realm of oblivion.

So before I sign off, let me give you a couple of updates on Season Four. As mentioned elsewhere, the season will kick off with a feature length premiere. And I'm not just talking about a little extended episode, it'll be almost like a little movie in the middle of the series. It'll count as two episodes (it would air as a two parter in syndication), but it'll definitely be a movie premiere. You could also look at it as a pilot. And as pilots so often do, it'll introduce a couple of new things that will become crucial to the season.

The biggest new thing would have to a NEW CAST MEMBER!

Regular or re-curring, we're not sure yet actually. This character will definitely not be in all 24 episodes, but as shown by Amanda Tapping and Season Four of Atlantis, you don't have to be in ALL episodes of the season to be a regular. Regular would just mean that this new guy would pop up in the opening credits.
And here's the twist. It's not really a new guy. Well, he'll be new to Horizon, but he's spent some time being a regular cast member on SG-1.

I know what you're thinking: Wait? What did he just say? What the heck are they doing?

Let me just say, we've spent A LOT of time thinking about this (for the past several months), and we've come to the decision that this character will fit into the Horizon universe perfectly. He's already got some great, great dynamics with one of our other regular characters. So this is our way of shaking things up a little, and following the trend of adding a new cast member at the start of Season Four (as DS9, Voyager and Atlantis have done so nicely before us).

Oh yeah, and I've also got the current title for the two hour season premiere: "The Gateway of the Gods" It'll be followed by "Usurpers," which has been renamed to "Eden." And that will be followed by "The Bunker." I have a story that I've been talking about, but haven't officially pitched yet. It's called "Tomorrow's Son," and it's a time travel story.

Well, and with that it's time for me to sign off. It's amazing to see that this blog has been going on (on and off) since June of 2005; almost exactly two years ago. It was quite a ride, but what's the saying? All good things must come to an end.

So with that, thanks for reading this blog and occasionally posting a comment. Thanks for sticking with the show. Hope you'll stay with us.

Aaaaaaaaaaannnnnnd.... that's a wrap!

Thanks again. Good night and good luck!

See you around,
Alex

April 10, 2007

The final seven episodes of Season Three will start hitting the screens this Thursday. And in many ways these episodes will also be concluding a chapter of the series. With all outlines done, and work on episode 23 in progress, I have to say when it's all said and done, it really does feel like an ending. To the extent of had this been the show's final season, I think these episodes would have made for a satisfying conclusion. However, since this is not the final season (far from it), this arc will be leading us into a Season Four, where we'll be doing some very interesting things. Not that what we've been doing so far hasn't been interesting. But it's safe to say, that there'll be a couple of surprises headed your way.

But to talk a little more about the seven episode arc, surprises is a good way of describing it. There's so many twists and turns that occur over the course of these seven episodes that we have to be careful to ensure things don't get a little confusing. Basically you think the story is headed in one direction, and suddenly something happens, and it's going in a completely different direction. One of these interesting turning points will bring about the return of some characters we haven't seen since Season One (now there's something to speculate about). We'll be picking up on a couple of things that haven't been really dealt with since the show's first season. And of course you could think we've forgotten about then, however... you'd be mistaken.

So, things will start off with "Omen." And a lot of the things that we learn in "Omen" about a potentially very dark future will basically be overshadowing all of the following episodes. It'll become about trying to prevent that future from ever becoming a reality. Will that mean that we'll finally find the Book of Nosah'trah? Could it mean that the Vorian/Kih'Andari war will come to an end? And what about the Enoly being after the Book? It's very much possible that we'll have answers to all of those questions at some point over the course of the next six weeks.

And in the midst of all these epic events, we'll also be dealing some more with our characters -- some of which will find themselves going through some rather dark and trying times. It's also very much possible that we'll see the return of Bay'lar (at some point between "Omen" and episode 24). In fact, there's tons of great guest characters that will pop up at one point or another. Oh yeah, and then there's that rumor that we may be loosing a regular cast member before the season ends. Hmmm. Can't really go into that at the moment.

Well, now that I may have given you something to speculate and/or discuss or perhaps look forward to, I'll talk a little about what exactly we're working on right now. Complete drafts are done up to "As The Storm Rises..." (the title couldn't be more fitting); "So Near the Darkness and the Night" should be done pretty soon. And I've started working on the first draft of episode 23 today.

And I'm happy to say that for the first time ever we're on such a great schedule that we'll have an actual production hiatus between the seasons. So I'm looking forward to taking a short break, recharging, finally getting started on a movie script I've been wanting to write, and then... we've got 24 all new episodes to come up with. And I think it's safe to say that we're all pretty excited about what we have planned for Season Four so far.

At the moment I'm sorry to say that we haven't got any designers on board. Unofficially, I guess we do, but it's been so long since we've heard from any of them that you could really say that they're not actually involved in the series. I'm still hoping to hear from at least one of them again, so who knows. But in any event, once this season wraps by the end of the month, I'll be putting some more time and effort into trying to get some active designers onto the team. The plan is to finally have an official design for Horizon by the time Season Four premieres. It's been almost three years now, after all.

I don't think too many people believe that we'll really be seeing any progress in the designing area, and I can't blame them (we've been promising it for years now). It's a little like a curse. There always seem to be a lot of people who are interested, but then they come to realize that this will actually require them to invenst some time into the project. And once they realize that, they all run like hell. At least, that's what it feels like. Of course, everyone has other things that require their attention. But my belief is that if you really want to do this, and if you enjoy working on a project like this, you'll be able to find at least some time for it.

Anyway. That's the current status on that. In the realm of DVD watchings, I've finished watching Season Four of Seinfeld, and I'll be picking up Season Five shortly. Currently working my way through Season One of The King of Queens, re-watching Season Nine of SG-1 (finally I'll get to see that one episode that I missed when it aired on TV), and am eagerly awaiting the return of SG-1 and Atlantis this Friday. I'm also greatly enjoying 24 this season (great as always), am planning to pick up Atlantis Season Two soon, which means I'll also finally get to see that one episode that I missed when it aired (it's the one that aired at the same night as that one SG-1 episode I haven't seen yet). And I was also happy to see that what I consider one of the great classic TV shows is finally finding it's way to DVD: Hawaii Five-0. I'm planning to pick up the first season soon. I haven't seen that show in ages, but I remember that I used to love it. So I'm looking forward to seeing it again soon. Interestingly just when I started thinking about it, it came out on DVD.

Well, now before I head off, here's a little something to take in:

I'll try and do podcasts for all episodes of the finale arc, starting with "Omen." I know, it's hard to believe. But rest assured, I will definitely try. And eventually... it'll happen. Eventually. But hopefully soon. Maybe this week. Maybe. We'll have to see. So stay tuned.

And now I'll conclude this blog with the revelation of the final two episode titles of Season Three. You gotta wonder, what will the title of the final episode be? And once you know, you gotta wonder what it's about. At least, you could wonder... if you choose to.

"A Matter of Faith" & "Rapture"

May the speculations begin!

Goodnight and good luck,
Alex

March 15, 2007

So I'm sitting here, trying to gather some kind of inspiration and motivation for starting this blog -- and it's pretty difficult. The question immediately comes to mind: why? I think the reason is a simple one. Whenever you put time into trying to put together a blog entry with some assumingly interesting info on upcoming episodes, you'll end up getting no reaction or response whatsover. Leaving me only with one conclusion -- people couldn't care less about this blog. So I've been thinking about just giving it one final entry, sort of a grand finale, and then just call it a wrap. Why let a blog slowly die, if you it can go out with some honor, and with a bang? But then again, what if I get the urge to blog again at some point in the future. Do I start a new blog? So the decision was an easy one: the blog must go on! Regardless of whether or not anyone gives a damn about it. It ain't going anywhere. Eventually, probably, it will. But not yet.

Of course, one has to wonder what the reasons could be for the lack of responses. Not only talking about this blog, but about everything in general. The funny thing is we're not actually asking people to talk to us, as in the team behind Stargate: Horizon. The forum is also there so that the fans can discuss their series amongst each other. But alas, there seems to be no motivation to do that. Everything is silent. People are either loving or hating the show. But one thing's for sure -- if they love it, they won't actually tell us.

So feel free to bring up your own suggestions for how to get some more activity going on the forum -- that is if that's something you'd like to see.

Anyway. Might as well through in some updates on what's currently going on here around the production offices. We're about a month away from wrapping any major work on writing the season. Outlines are done up to episode 22. 23 and 24 are in outline development.

And once more there's been changes with regard to some episode titles. What used to be known as "Conspiracy" has been renamed into "Hidden Agendas," because it's really not a conspiracy. After some uncertainty over wether "The Guardians" is a better title for episode 20 or "The Higher Plane," we're currently sticking to the latter. Don't be surprised if it changes again, but as of right now that's unlikely.

We're still struggling with the right title for episode 21. Originally it was called "Vendetta." When working out the final outline, I realized that "Shades of Grey" would make an interesting title, because of all the shades of grey that happen in this episode. But then Mike kindly informed me that "Shades of Grey" is a title already used on Stargate -- on Stargate SG-1 to be precise. "Bad Blood" was then suggested as another title. And while the outline still refers to the episode as "Shades of Grey," one thing's for sure -- that will still change in one way or another. Perhaps we'll just go with "Shades of Yellow" instead, even though some seem to prefer "Shades of Blue." Also in the race: "Shades of Green," because we do actually see chevrons in this episode, and "Shades of Pink," for no reason whatsoever. But my current favorite on the list of potential titles would have to be "Shades of Goldenrod."

While we're still deciding on 21, we've got a great and very unique title for episode 22: "So Near The Darkness And The Night." That, of course, is just a more creative and poetic way of saying: "Impending Doom."

As for the writing of the scripts, I'm working my way through "The Higher Plane." Marc's taking on "Shades of Whatever-Color-You-Prefer," and Mike's working on "So Near The Darkness And The Night."

Overall I couldn't be happier with this seven episode arc. In fact, I'll even compare it the the ending of Season One, where a lot of fans seem to believe that with "The Enoly" the series took a huge leap in terms of quality. Well, naturally that's up for our silent fans to decide for themselves, but I think that with the ending of Season Three, the series is about to take another leap like that, setting the bar very high come Season Four. One surprise twist follows the other during these final seven episodes. Add one or two shocks along the way, and voila: it's 24 in space, but without the real time, and with space ships and aliens.

And I guarantee you that at the ending of episode 22, you won't be able to tell just what will happen in the two part finale. All bets are off. And as of right now... not even we know what will happen. We've discussed ideas, but at this point we're taking it scene by scene. Should be interesting.

I should also talk briefly about the upcoming episode "Together We Stand." It was highly anticepated a couple of weeks ago, and while everyone seems to have gotten quiet about it lately, I do hope that the anticepation is still there. We all consider this episode as one of the best we've ever done, and I think I can speak for all of us when I say that we're very proud of it, and how it deals with a very compelling issue.

Let me put it this way: this is our version of "Saving Private Ryan." It's a drama about a group of people, who end up facing the brutality of war as no one would ever want to. Things get very powerful, intense and brutal. And at it's core, it's a story that sends a message out there, reminding people of something that no one should ever forget about.

And with that, I'll sign off, wondering if anyone will ever read this blog. Either way, they won't say anything. That gives me an idea actually: perhaps in my next blog, I could post all spoilers from next week's episode up to the what we're currently working on, and see what happens.

I might do that. But until then, good night and good luck!

Alex

January 24, 2007

So here we are again. I know what you're thinking -- "he only updated his blog yesterday, and now he's back already?! This wasn't supposed to happen for at least five weeks!!!" But what can I say? I like to be unpredictable, so here I am. I believe this is the first time I'm blogging two days in a row. And I must say I'm very proud of this achievement.

Today's pictures give you a look at my regular trip to work, as well as my kitchen (giving you some more insight into things). The lack of reactions to the previous blog only leads me to believe that many of you haven't even seen it yet. But that in no way prevents me from blogging yet again; you don't know what you're missing -- not just talking about pictures.

Let's start with a report of what we did yesterday. After I had posted yesterday's blog, I went on to work on "Together We Stand." I was realizing that the script was getting way too long, so I had to cut some scenes from the teaser, which is now down to seven pages. It used to be eleven pages long. I haven't finished the first draft yet, but will be doing that today. I know there've been a lot of talks about this episode, and I think once it airs it'll become more clear why that's the case. It's just a very powerful and dramatic story, which at its core is about exploring how war can change a character. Meaning we get to see how some characters learn to deal with war. We have three great guest characters in this episode, but we also get a look at how some of our regular characters deal with the situations they face in the episode, and how that might have an impact on their behaviours. Some great Callen moments. I'm loving the Lenori bonds with this-other-particular-character beats. And here's a surprise for ya: this will also be a very big episode for Zach Hoffmann.

When it was getting close to one o'clock, I decided that it would be a good time to eat something. So I rose from my chair to move over to the refrigerator (in the back on the left hand side of the third picture), grabbed a TV dinner, placed it in the microwave (on the right hand side of the same picture), turned on the microwave, and waited patiently until the TV dinner was done. I then moved over to the nearby table (from where the picture in question was taken), and as I was eating my lunch (with a Diet Pepsi), I listened to the latest GateWorld interview with Amada Tapping.

Eventually I decided it was time to get back to work, so I did. Worked some more on "Together We Stand," while contemplating whether or not to drive to a nearby store to finally purchase Season Nine of SG-1. Tried to do that last Saturday actually, but shockingly they were sold out.

Eventually, I made the decision. After having written several scenes featuring various interesting little character interactions, I once more rose from my chair, quickly got ready, and proceeded to my car. And despite the bad weather (raining), I drove to the store only to realize that they still hadn't gotten Season Nine in again. But I was determined not to return home empty-handed; I knew I hadn't gone through all that bad weather in vain -- that was something I was not willing to accept.

So I proceeded to a nearby shopping mall, commonly referred to as the Galleria (also happens to be where my "other job" is located). Once I arrived there, I immediately headed to another store, and was pleased to find a shining little Season Nine DVD boxset. I reacted accordingly, and quickly grabbed it. Part of me knew I had to proceed to the register and check out quickly before the temptations would overwhelm me; however, it was too late already. As usually when in a store which is filled with an endless amount of DVDs and CDs, I couldn't help but have a look around, and suddenly my eyes fell on some Seinfeld DVD sets. Or to be precise, it caught my attention that they were selling them for merely $24.99. After a few brief moments of contemplating my next steps, I decided to act instead of thinking about it too much longer. And I picked up Volume One, which contains Seasons One and Two of Seinfeld.

I checked out, and made my way back to the parking garage to conclude what I considered a successful mission. And then the voyage home began. As so often I hadn't taken into consideration that it was around five fifteen -- the time where traffic on the roads is so heavy that it makes you wonder if all people living in the area decided purposely to get together for a nice and cozy little standing around idle on the freeway, and every so often actually moving along at a snail's pace. But anyway, I accepted this, knowing deep down that having purchased these DVD sets was worth the effort. As I was in danger of becoming frustrated by the heavy traffic, I reminded myself of how much fun it would be to not only enjoy some great moments of TV on DVD, my mind also was on the fantastic special features that really make buying a DVD worth it -- at least for me.

When I finally arrived back home, I was back at the computer. Did some more work, but nothing too heavy. My dad stopped by to borrow the tape that contains the latest episode of 24. When handing it to him, I was careful not to reveal any of the latest surprises and twists that had occurred on that wonderful show. I then spent the early evening doing some revising of the scenes I had written that day, I listened in when the president gave his state of the union address, and I talked to Mike on MSN.

As it was about eleven o'clock, I called it a night, and proceeded to enjoy some of the DVDs that I had purchased earlier in the day. I watched parts of a Seinfeld audio commentary, but decided to watch the actual episodes first. I then took some SG-1 DVDs, and listened to the insightful audio commentaries for "Avalon, Parts One and Two," and watched two additional special features. A profile on Brad Wright, and an installment of the SG-1 director's series: "Crusade" with Robert C. Cooper. All features were insightful as well as entertaining.

When I realized that it was two a.m., I thought about grabbing a couple of hours of sleep before getting back to work -- and I did. I wish I could remember what I dreamed, but I can't unfortunately. I always like remembering dreams actually, but I find that I only do remember them occasionally. I tend to remember the exceptionally weird ones.

I got up at eight a.m. Proceeded to grab some breakfast. I forgot to buy coffee yesterday, but I'm enjoying some more Red Bull. And before getting to work I decided to blog yet again, and inform those of you who are reading this of my latest adventures. And with that... the circle is complete.

Stay tuned, as I will return shortly with a report on day four of the vacation week!

Until then,
Alex

January 23, 2007

Who's the guy on the pictures, may be the first question that comes to mind. Is he a new actor we've cast to play the part of that new hansom, and charming recurring character we're introducing in the back half of this season? Is he just some random guy, of whom I thought it could be fun if I kicked off my first blog in over a month with a couple of pictures of him? Or are there not really any pictures and it's all just a figment of your imagination? Or... could it really be? Is it possible that? Could it have happened that you've finally learned what one of the guys behind the scenes on Stargate: Horizon actually looks like? AFTER OVER TWO YEARS!!!

I won't give away the answer to that question, but am eagerly awaiting your suggestions. Well then, with that said, shall we move on to business?

I have to say I had realized that it's been a while since my last blog, but I wasn't really aware that it's been THAT long. December 12th. Go figure. But anyway, I've been wanting to get back to blogging for a while now, and here I am - once more. And Happy New Year to all of you!

This week I'm on vacation from my other job. Other as in not the job that is writing and producing Stargate: Horizon, which involves all sorts of things aside from writing actually. You have story meetings, you need to make sure everyone's up to date on what's going on, you work on recruiting concept artists, occasionally you'll give notes on scrips or even work on rewrites. And sometimes I even get quite caught up in actually writing an episode. But I'm sure you're aware of all of this anyway, so I won't go on boring you with the details.

But anyway, where were we? Ah, yes. Vacation. Not that I don't absolutely love this other job of mine. Okay, who am I fooling? I don't love this other job of mine. In fact, I love it so little that part of my vacation will be dedicated to sending out various applications in an effort to try and get a new job in the near future. Most likely something in an office, and most definitely something that will pay better, and contribute to getting good ol' Alex finally to where he needs to be -- to good ol' Los Angeles, or shall we say Hollywood?

Aside from that, the week will be dedicated mainly to what I consider my REAL job, which would be the one where I work on Horizon. And there's lots of things to do, as we're already gearing up towards the end of the season. I realize that you've actually only got to see the first nine episodes so far, but rest assured that we here beyond the Horizon are hard at work on episodes all the way up to episode twenty, for which I'm currently working on the outline. I can't really say much about it, other than that it starts with a surprise and VERY familiar face stepping through the Stargate with some pretty crazy news. Then, as the story builds up, we head off to this planet, where go into this crazy building. And then those bad guys show up, and all sorts of... uh, crazy things will happen. In short: it's crazy. In a good way. Just need to get the outline done, which in my case is often the most difficult part when working on an episode. Once you've got those beats worked out, it's all about translating this elaborate beat sheet/outline into a script.

Mike turned in his first draft of "Mediation" yesterday, and let me just tell you: this will be one of our best two parters yet. And I'm not trying to hype things, I'm just speaking as a fan of the show, because I am definitely a fan as well. We've got some great stuff coming up. I believe we're all pretty excited about how this season will unfold over the course of its second half. I turned in my first draft for "Adrift" the other day. An episode I'm pretty happy with. In particular the Sivea/Christine moments turned out quite powerful. In many ways the episode is similar in style to SG-1's "Tangent," in that a failed test of a certain new technological achievement places the lives of some of our characters in serious jeopardy. So even though someone on the boards suggested that perhaps this episode could be a "Grace group therapy episode," I actually like to think of it as a "Tangent for five" episode.

We haven't talked much about "The Inner Voice," have we? And actually we should probably keep it that way, at least until we get a little closer to the release date. All I can really say, or much rather confirm is that Arina will be in that episode. And it's an episode that will shed a lot of light into Chase's backstory. I think it's a fun episode. No comedy episode, but a couple of entertaining exchanges between Chase and Arina. And it starts off with a situation which could be described as bizarre.

Well, what else is new? Except for the new year, of course. Yup. You've guessed it: a new season of 24 has started airing last week. I can't really say too much without either giving away spoilers or just repeating what I say all the time (that it's a great show!); so I'll just say... uh... it's a GREAT show! For those one or two of you who haven't seen it, seems you have some catching up to do.

With that said, let the day begin! Just finishing breakfast actually. Forgot to buy coffee the other day, but my Red Bull drink is making up for it. You have to keep that energy and concentration going if you're going to be writing like crazy today.

I'll be blogging a little more in the near future. For now I'm off to finish the first draft of "Together We Stand." Oh, and expect the podcast for "Resurfacing" to appear soon. I might squeeze recording that into today's schedule as well.

Alex

Alright, folks. Things have been a little quiet around here lately, but starting with today that shall change. There haven't been too many comment on the message boards, which might have to do with the little fact that not too much info has been unveiled lately. So brace yourselves; I'm back with a new blog, and tons of information. Or shall we say some minor spoilers.

Initially I was planning on posting this blog last night, but I ended up just being too tired. So here I am today, sitting here with a cup of coffee (black), and typing away the latest info on things happening beyond the horizon. Seeing as I'm off today from my other job, it'll be a busy day here. We only have about five weeks to get episode 3.10 ready, so my main focus today will be on that one. And after having considered various titles for it, the latest one is definitely my favorite. We've been keeping it in the dark for some time now, but I think now is a good time to let you in. The continuation of "Resurfacing" shall be called... "...Shall We Not Revenge?" And I must say, this is one of my favorite episode titles so far. Work on this one is a little crazy, because it was tricky to work out. So I'm still finishing up the outline, while I actually already wrote the teaser and act one of the script. Not the way you normally do it, but hey, whatever works.

Another priority today will be to finally get that first draft of "Countdown" ready and turned in, that being episode 3.11. This one was also difficult to work out, mainly because it needs to balance the Zach/Jerry storyline with the David/Tom/Barrett plot. And because of time constraints I was forced to drop an entire subplot, which I had initially considered for this episode. But come to think of it, it works better this way anyway.

Well, those are episodes ten and eleven. But why don't we venture a little further ahead? As it happens, I've already finished the first draft for 3.15 last week, and it's called "The Inner Voice." I think it's a great episode for Chase, in which we finally get some insight into his background, and in which an old friend makes a second appearance this season. At least... sort of.

We have an outline for 3.14, and Vincent will be writing the script for this one. This will be a nice team episode, focusing on Grant's character. But I also particularly like the Sivea/Christine and Tom/Yusuf moments. The original title for this one was "Death's Chariot," which was revealed some time ago. But since then we've changed it to "Adrift."

This coming weekend I'll be getting started on the script for 3.16. The outline's done, and we're all very happy with it. I will say this: this will not be a typical episode. It's about a rescue mission behind enemy lines, characters in a hopeless situation, and all the other horrors of war. And since we're giving away titles today... this one is called "Together We Stand." And dare I say, it's looking to be quite a memorable episode.

We're also working on outlines for 3.17 and 3.18. 3.17 being a Tom episode, for which - if we were shooting the show - a great deal of scenes would be shot on the Atlantis sets. 3.18 will be our very first time travel episode that doesn't involve direct time travel; it's also a great episode for Christine. It came out of a story concept that Joe Hodkiss pitched last season. The current story doesn't have too much to do with that anymore, but it still keeps one basic element, which I really couldn't give away just yet. But let's just say we'll be seeing A LOT of Christine in this episode. Really more than ever before.

And 3.19 only exists in form of a story document so far, but it'll be another great episode, which Mike will be writing once he finishes the mid season two parter. This one will be a Lenori episode. And we've been discussing bringing back a character, whom we haven't seen since the first half of Season Two.

Well, there you have it. Just look at all the information I've been giving away here. Perhaps I should be doing all of these blogs in the mornings from now on; I seem to be more generous at this time of day.

Some other things on the agenda for today would be for me to get back to some of our potential new concept artists. There's three of them, of which I'm pretty sure they'll b joining the team. And this time I've got a good feeling, meaning we might actually get something done in that area this time around. I should also get back with Justin, a composer we've been talking to about doing a main title theme for us.

But now, FINALLY, let me get to the question, which I'm sure all of you are wondering about. And the answer that is... not yet. But I will on Friday. The question obviously being: have I already picked up Season Five of 24 on DVD. So that I'll do on Friday, and I can't wait. Currently I'm still in the midst of DS9 Season Five, just watched what's perhaps one of the best two parters of all times last night.

Oh, and I'm not sure what's more shocking. The fact that I forgot to post a question for the Get In The Gate Contest last week, or the fact that no one mentioned anything. But either way, I'll be posting two questions later today. And, of course, I'll be doing the podast for "My Enemy's Enemy" at that latest tomorrow. Speaking of which, I'm getting the feeling that some of you aren't listening to them, because you think they're just as horrible as the ones for "Path of Revelation." Well, let me just tell you: you don't know what you're missing. The problem with the "Path of Revelation" commentaries was that they went on for too long, and I think they were a little repetitive. Also, I wasn't an experienced podcaster as I am now. These latest podcasts contain some interesting facts, concerning the creation of the story. I think especially for those of you working on your own virtual series, it could be interesting to get some insight into this, to see how we do things over here. But it's up to you, of course. One thing's for sure, the podcasts ain't going anywhere. Whether you choose to listen to them, or if you prefer to ignore them.

Well, I think that covers just about everything for now. Definitely looking forward to seeing what you think of "My Enemy's Enemy," which is one of my favorite episodes of this season actually. I think this is one of Mike's best episodes yet; from the day we first started talking about the story, I loved it. It's got some great character moments (Sivea/Sonak as well as one of my favorite Grant/Sivea scenes), some unexpected twists, more shades of gray than ever, and some nice action sequences.

And with that said, I'll talk to you later!
Alex

It's that time of the year again...

The time when Alex updates his blog!!!!!!

I've been planning to do this for some time now (almost forgot about it today), but here I am, at last. We're three episodes into the new season, and so far we've had some good fan reactions to the new episodes. I am very eager to see what you all will be thinking about this week's episode, "The Search, Part Two." I just recorded the podcast for it today actually. All I can tell you is that the episode will have some more revelations, an interesting twist toward the end, and a certain maneuver which will most likely go down in the Vorian history books.

Things are going very well here. Recently we've started a new forum, which is designed kind of like an online office, much more organized than our previous development forum. It's proven to work great so far. And we've even been making some progress in the art department. We've got some interesting design in the works, including a really great look for the aliens who will make their first appearance in "Resurfacing."

Speaking of "Resurfacing," Marc has turned in his first draft, which is looking great. You can expect some nice Sivea/Bay'lar moments in this one, as we take a look at their relationship, get some insight into Bay'lar's past, and as they both end up going on this certain mission, which will lead to the encounter with those certain aliens, who will be featured even more in part two.

I'm still working on episode 3.11 (first draft should be done soon) after having done a pass on "Trepidation." Vincent's turned in his outline for 3.14 today. I haven't seen it yet, but am looking forward to. Mike's still got his hands full with the conclusion of the mid-season two parter. But he's already mentioned that he'd be interested in taking on the episode later this season, in which we might get to see more of Christine than ever before, in any previous episode ever. And I mean MORE in a very literal sense.

I've said this before, but it's worth mentioning it again. This year we're definitely way ahead of schedule, and I think the episodes are benefiting from that. We've got the time we need to work out all of the stories, and get them to a point where they're as good as they could possibly be. And other than that it's just great to not have that disturbing feeling of running out of time... uh all the time.

Still working on building my DS9 DVD collection; just on Monday I was lucky enough to find Season Five for a very acceptable price. Great timing, since I'm almost finished watching Season Four on DVD. In fact, I'll be off to watch the season finale after I finish this blog update. I'm kind of working through them out of order; after Season Five I'll be getting six and seven, and then I'll be getting the first three. That's just my non-linear way of doing things.

Speaking of DVDs, Season Five of 24 will be coming out pretty soon: December 5th. Can't wait. Still haven't gotten Season Nine of SG-1, but am planning to do that very soon. Same goes for the first two seasons of Battlestar Galactica. On the movie front, I've picked up Mission Impossible 3 not too long ago. I thought it was great, and I loved the fact that it was more character driven than the first two. Should proof interesting to see what J.J. Abrahams will be doing with Star Trek 11, which I'm highly anticipating.

Now, before I conclude this latest blog of mine, I wanted to share something with you. A couple of days ago I was contacted by someone who's part of the creative team at GCBme.com, named Mark. He asked me to help spread the word regarding a video contest that they're hosting with MGM to help save Stargate SG-1. It's been posted as a news release on GateWorld in the meantime, so chances are you already know about this. However, I'll be posting parts of the original message that Mark sent to me.

Here it is:
My name is Mark and I am part of the creative team at GCBme.com. We are hosting an official video contest with MGM to help save Stargate SG-1 called "Keep the Gate Open" with a grand prize of $1000 and a signed script of SG-1's 200th episode going to the winner (www.gcbme.com/stargate). The goal of the contest is to showcase the fans interest in seeing the show return for an 11th season. The more entries and interest there is, the more meaningful the contest becomes. The contest is up and running and ends on the 20th of November. After that, we will be posting the top 10 videos up for a public vote with the winner walking away with the grand prize.GCBme is a new site devoted to contests like this, and we'll be posting more contests in the future, but Stargate SG-1 is our first and we need your help to make it a success.

So you've heard it. Go check out their site, and see if there's something you can do to help out.

And with that little message, I shall conclude tonight's blogging process. Looking forward to seeing your reactions to "The Search, Part Two." And I'll be talking to you again soon.

Until next time,
Alex

The Return and... Season Three!

I know, it's been a while since I've last blogged. In fact, I was looking over past entries, and was shocked to discover that it's been almost exactly four months now since the last entry. Which is truthfully a shame. But, now with Season Three about to hit the screens, and us hard at work on various episodes, I shall promise to return to a more frequent blogging routine.

Let's start with some words about the upcoming Season Three. I must say that I couldn't be happier with all of the episodes we've done so far, and I just continue to be enormously proud of this show. It might not be on TV, but I'll always be proud of the work we've done and continue to do nonetheless. I think this might easily be our best season yet. I'm definitely enjoying it the most out of all of the previous seasons; in part, maybe because for the very first time we're so far ahead of the release schedules, that we've got nearly drafts or outlines for the entire first half of the season.

I also think it'll be our most ambitious season, and our most complex from a story telling point of view; it's very arc driven, but still has it's share of old fashioned stand alone episodes that pop up along the way. And we're about to unleash a storyarc, which in a way will feature some interesting parallels to events in today's world (one aspect of that arc, anyway). So all in all, I couldn't be happier with how it's turning out. But what will be really important is to see what you all think. So be sure to post your comments on the message boards; tell us what you like or didn't like. We always want to know.

Now, to make up for four long and blog-less months, let me make up for it by taking you through each of the episodes out of the first half of the season, and giving you some comments on them, and perhaps even some clues.

Things kick off with "Rogues," the big season premiere. "Rogues" will introduce a new recurring character, virtually played by Peter Weller. And this character is hoping to get his hands on a certain something, and he believes firmly that David Connor will be able to help him out with that. Look out for some nice character moments in this one, a surprise appearance by a familiar face (which we've kept in the dark so far), and the return of a steward.

Then things continue with "The Circle," which picks up where "Rogues" will leave off. In a way "Rogues" and "The Circle" are a two parter, even though the conclusion of "The Circle" will lead straight into the next two parter, "The Search, Parts One and Two." "The Search" will be all about -- you've guessed it -- a search. For answers to what exactly they might be looking for, check out last season's finale "Revolution," and you could have the answer. The first four episodes could be described best as two two-parters back to back, and together they form a four episode arc. It's really kind of like a mini-series, if you will.

All of that will be followed by "Preservation," which will be an episode in style very similar to "In Times of Despair." We'll be dealing with some unresolved matters from the first four episodes, and we'll also be dealing with the Tok'ra, and a certain rather complex relationship between a Tok'ra and an ex-To'kra.

After all of that, we'll then be heading into an old fashioned go-through-the-gate-get-into-trouble-episode, titled "Trepidation." While the first five episodes were written by yours truly, this one was written by Cindy Clark, one of several new staff writers. It was a difficult episode to figure out, and we had to break it and re-break it several times actually. It's looking good, though. It's a fun one-off that balances it's rather dark a-plot with a rather light b-plot.

That's followed by "My Enemy's Enemy," Mike's first episode of this season. I think this one's great in that combines all the things that really make the show what it is. It's got some great character drama, some unexpected twists, some tight action sequences, and some fantastic shades of gray. Throw in Sivea and Sonak, and voila... you'll have one great episode.

After that we take a break from it all in order to go on "A Pleasant Little Trip." This one was written by yours truly as well, and I have to say I had a blast writing it. I still can't read through the script without smiling. It's a fun episode, with a plot that also has its twists here and there. We get to see some rather unique alien names in this one, but giving those away would ruin the fun in the episode. And throw in Chase and Arina, and you'll have a fun ride, which should definitely proof to be a trip.

What follows then is the Sivea/Bay'lar episode, which has been titled "Resurfacing." This one was a challenge in that we've had trouble making the original ending work. Eventually we just decided to forget about the original ending... and a make it a two-parter. Marc Broadbent, another one of our new staff writers, is working on it as I'm typing this. The episode will also give us a first glimpse at an alien species, whom we've heard about, but we've never actually seen them. While the focus of "Resurfacing" is on Sivea and Bay'lar, the second part of this arc will feature these aliens more heavily; it's been titled tentatively, but unfortunatly the title would give away the name of the aliens. But let me give you a hint. It's called "The [insert the alien name here]".

After that two-parter, there'll be an episode coming up for which I'm working on the outline right now actually. It's going surprisingly easy, and I'm already halfway through act three. This episode for the most part takes place on Earth, and looking at the story so far, I think it'll capture the spirit and feel of the SG-1 Earth episodes, something we set out to do. There'll be some character development for one or our recurring characters, who hasn't had too much development so far. I think this season we'll see this character grow quite a bit. There'll also be some fun David and Tom moments in this one, and we'll most likely be seeing a guest star who's made a couple of appearances on SG-1.

And after that we'll be seeing the first part of the mid-season two parter. And the first draft of part one has been completed for some time now actually. Mike's currently working on part two (he also wrote part one). Looks like this season the mid-season two-parter will indeed be a two parter; however, it's quite possible that part two will be one of those 90 minute episodes.

Episode fourteen will be an episode that Vincent is currently working on, tentatively titled "Death's Chariot." The focus of this one will be Colonel Grant. We'll get some insight into his background, and from what we've discussed so far we should also be seeing some nice team moments in this one.

Just the other day I pitched a story, which will be all about Chase, and it should give him quite some development. I can see this one ending up as episode fifteen. And sixteen is a great concept, and I definitely can't give much away about it just yet. For one, because we haven't even broken it just yet. But the story is something that Mike and I were discussing, and we came up with some great beats. That's all I can say for now. Not bad for a guy who hasn't blogged in four months, ey?

What else is new, you ask? I was having some trouble with my car a couple of weeks ago, so I had to get it repaired. Then it worked for almost exactly three weeks, before it broke down again. Had to get it fixed again, and this time I'm pleased to say it's really fixed. It's running smoothly again, fortunately.

Finally started my DS9 DVD collection. I've only got Season Four so far. It was a spontaneous buy, because I saw it for just $69.99, I believe (normally you can't find them for under $100). So I've been enjoying some great DS9 episodes these past few weeks, and I've realized once again just why, in my opinion, this will always be one of the greatest shows that were ever on television. I watched 4.18 last night. A great episode called "Rules of Engagement."

I also started re-watching Season Three of 24. I just had that urge again to see that ticking clock coming up on the screen. So for the most part I've been alternating between DS9 and 24. I'll be picking up Season Nine of SG-1 probably this weekend or next week. I was shocked to learn that Atlantis Season Two won't be out until January, which kind of makes no sense to me at all; you'd figure they'd want it to be available in December because of Christmas. But what can you do? On the bright side, Season Five of 24 will be out on December 5th. Interesting that it's the fifth, which is kind of a special date for me, as it'll be exactly a year that I've met someone who's become quite an important part of my life. So looks like December 5th is a lucky day of mine.

Now I'm thinking about what else is new. I should probably call it a night soon, as I'll try to get up early tomorrow morning to go get a hair cut before heading to work; it's been a while, and I've found those hairs just don't stop growing. Speaking of which, it occurred to me that for almost two years now I've been producing this virtual series, but a face behind the name or names has or have yet to emerge. So I'll try to get a picture up with perhaps a more up to date bio as soon as possible, for those of you who wonder about these kind of things.

Anyway, for now I'll just say I hope you'll enjoy reading Season Three as much as we're enjoying writing it. This time you can expect some podcasts or Making Of features to be coming your way. There's a lot to say about the episodes, so it should be interesting. Also, make sure to keep visiting the forums on GateWorld and SGU. Make sure to post questions if you have any; the staff and I are always eager to see your thoughts, and answer your questions.

And before I go I shall promise that this time it won't be four months until the next blog. You have my word.

And with that I'll say good night, and until next time!

Alex

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://alex-sgh.blogspot.com/2006/10/return-and-season-three.html' title='The Return and... Two days to go, and Season Two will be airing its ninety minute finale. It should make for a memorable night, after which we might start seeing first speculations and discussions about just where things might be going in Season Three.

As I'm typing this, pre-production on Season Three has already begun. In fact, I've already finished an outline for the season premiere. I'm now working on the outline for episode two of Season Three. I can't remember if I've already mentioned this, but this time the season will kick off with an opening three parter. Considering how we've always had to deal with length problems (somehow we always find a way to work around them) we figured this time we'll try a different approach. So we won't even be trying to do a two parter, and we figured let's go with a three parter. Can't really say too much about it without spoiling some of the biggest surprises of the Season Two finale.

I've spent a majority of today downloading demos and trying out different screenwriting softwares. For two seasons now we've been writing scripts using a free Microsoft Word template called Script Smart. It's okay, considering it's available for free. But we've decided to make some improvements. And I've decided that it's definitely time for me to get myself a bit more of a functional screenwriting software. So I've looked at a majority of potential programs, each having their pros and cons. Let me take you through some of them, before I tell you which one ultimately won, and has been crowned as my personal favorite.

- FINAL DRAFT
Probably one of the best known professional softwares. It's definitely a great program. It's efficient, easy to use, it formats as you go along. My big point of concern was its enormous prize. It's quite expensive. I was thinking about getting it anyway, though. But I decided to look at some other programs first.

- SOPHOCLES
Another great software. In a way it's similar to Final Draft. However, it doesn't format the script until you go out of the writing mode and look at it as a print preview. Not a big deal, but it would take me some getting used to. A really great thing about this program is that it times the script - meaning it will give you an estimate of how long each of the scenes are, and how long the script will be in total. Long as in hours and minutes. It's also not as expensive as Final Draft.

- CELTX
Strangely I never thought of actually just searching the web for a free screenwriting software other than Script Smart. Well, I found this the other day because I saw it mentioned on a message board. I've tried it, and it's really good. It's free, so it won't have the features that Final Draft and Sophocles have. My big problem with this one is that I can't figure out how to center the text, which we'd have to do at the beginning and end of every act. And I don't know how to insert a page break, which we'd also have to do at the end of every act. But other than that, this is a very good software.

- SCREENWRITER PRO VERSION 3.5
This one I only tried briefly, but I just couldn't get used to how it works - i.e. the screen set up while you're writing. I can't really say how good or bad it is in terms of functionality in general, but I personally didn't feel comfortable with it. It was just too different from what I'm accustomed to.

- HOLLYWOOD SCREENWRITER
A very cheap program; only about $60 (the others cost between $160 and $200). How is this one? I wish I could tell you. The big problem with it is, there's no free demo available. Why in the world would I buy this, spend money for it, if I don't even know what it will look like? So, that one didn't work out for me.

Finally, after doing some more searches, I decided to try another software. It's claimed to be one of the most used ones in Hollywood:

- MOVIE MAGIC SCREENWRITER
To put it in three simple words: I love it! This one's a great program. As I said, most of the others were too, but I just immediately fell in love with how this one works. After trying it out for a bit, I knew it had won the contest. This is the one I'll be going with. It's a great software that has a wonderful revision function, once you start revising scripts. It automatically changes the drafts to the individual revision colors, it's interface looks a lot like Microsoft Word, which makes it feel very familiar.

Interestingly I also discovered today that this is actually the screenwriting software used on Stargate SG-1 and Stargate: Atlantis. I saw a quote from Brad Wright, where he says it's one of the best softwares. I can only agree with that. Well, boys and girls, that means that starting with Season Three, Stargate: Horizon will be written on the same screenwriting software as its televised sister shows. This might or might not mean much, but I personally think that's great.

Naturally I can't expect all of the writers on staff to purchase this software. The cheapest you can get it for is about $170. So I'll just be reformatting the scripts once they reach their final drafts. And - this is another aspect of this software that I love - it allows you to import scripts written on other programs, and it reformats them almost completely automatically. On the other softwares you can import the scripts, but you'll still be doing the majority of the reformatting. This baby will handle it on its own. You might just have to correct minor things here and there.

Well, that's what came out of my little mission to seek out and explore various screenwriting softwares. I'll be purchasing Movie Magic Screenwriter before the end of the week, and I'll start writing the season premiere this weekend.

On other fronts, I haven't had the time to re-watch too many more episodes of 24 recently. But no worries, I'll be getting back to that soon. I have started getting into the habit of watching Seinfeld reruns every night. In fact, it will be on in about 25 minutes. A great show. It's very funny, and I think it's got kind of a crazy and weird humor - which is a form of humor I personally can't get enough of (see "The Fantastic Three"). I used to watch it every now and then. Then hadn't seen it in years, and suddenly, one night I caught it. Gotta love a show about nothing.

By the way, I completely forgot to tell you that I've discovered a new flavor of Diet Pepsi: Diet Pepsi Vanilla. It's different, but great. I'm loving it. As a matter of fact, the supplies are running low, and I'll be buying some more tomorrow. Along with the regular Caffeine Free Diet Pepsi and perhaps Diet Pepsi Lime.

That's about it. I'm looking forward to seeing your reactions to "Revolution," the big season finale. Here's a little tid bit of information: we hadn't decided until the very last moment how the episode would end. Of course we knew where we wanted to go, but it took us some time to figure out how exactly to go about it. This episode has also had a countless amount of rewrites. It took a lot of work, was one of those big challenges, but it should definitely be worth it. I'll talk more about it after its release. I'm planning to do at least a Making Of and/or podcast for both parts of the finale.

And with that I'll say, hope you'll enjoy the episode. And I'll talk to you later.

Alex

Untitled Blog... it's Friday, June 9th 2006... only a day before Saturday, June 10th 2006... but there's no title for this blog...

Just figured I'd post a quick blog to keep you apprised of latest developments. Let's start with the really important stuff: I've started rewatching Season Four of 24. Yup. I couldn't help it. After Season Five had finished its run I had developed extensive withdrawal symptoms. What are those symptoms you wonder? It all started with me developing an unusual urge to announce "the following takes place between time-a and time-b" at the top of every hour throughout the course of the day. That's when I realized something was wrong, but I didn't make too much of it yet. However, when I found myself feeling compelled to head out to try and find out where the local CTU here in Houston is located, I came to the conclusion that I must have been in the process of loosing my mind. I realized I was loosing the ability of separating reality from the fictional environment of a television show. But I tried to ignore that, and pretend that everything was fine. But only a few days later, I went to work and... my memory is a little sketchy at this point, so bare with me. The next thing I knew, I was pointing a pen at a confused man's head, asking him intently where the bomb is. He was unable to provide me with a satisfactory answer, and I was just about to proceed to a more "invasive" questioning method, when a co-worker pointed out to me that my name was in fact not Jack Bauer and that that pen was not a weapon. Confused I was when I went home that day, still keeping close track of the time so that I would be aware whenever a new hour/episode was about to kick off. Eventually I realized there was only one solution... I had to start watching 24 again. It was the only way out. Deep down I knew that if I were ever to regain my sanity, I had to grab one of the DVD sets, place the DVD into the DVD player, and hit the play button. Aaaaaaaaand... voila! Here I am. I'm seven episodes into Season Four, and will most likely watch an episode tonight. And I'm relieved to report that, very slowly, I'm beginning to regain the ability to tell the difference between reality and a television show. But it was tough.

Somehow in the midst of all that chaos, I've still managed to do some more work on "Revolution." I'm now in the middle of act four, and things are looking good. Our visual effects department (if we had one) will be having their hands full with this episode. I think I've said before that the guest cast list of this episode is quite long, it might be the largest guest cast of an episode of Horizon yet. One of the characters will be returning in a bit of a different way than we're used to seeing him/her. Including this character, and especially including this character in such a unique way, was a last minute idea actually. Often they're the ones that will work best.

A lot of people are probably expecting to see quite a huge space battle take place in this episode. After all, we'll be seeing lots of ships. But you have to wonder... just who exactly could be involved in this battle? All I'll say is... it's someone or something that no one's probably expecting. I'll just leave it at that.

We're running a little late this year compared to last year. Last year this time I was working on the season two premiere script. But I'm glad to say that we've still managed to stay on schedule for the most part. Season Three will probably premiere in November, and - even though we're not yet one hundred percent sure how many episode the season will contain - there'll probably be a shorter mid season break, due to the later premiere date. There's really not too much more to report on Horizon related things. We're expecting Making Of's to be coming out shortly; but I couldn't tell you what the progress on those is, as I haven't spoken to Mike since Tuesday. Will be talking to him this weekend. But I'm sure whenever they're ready, they'll be up. And once I finish this episode, I'm planning to do one or two Making Of's again as well.

I'm hoping that we'll be able to get some more active staff members on board throughout the coming weeks. I've been pondering a couple of episode ideas that I'll be pitching for Season Three. Naturally I couldn't give anything away here just yet. But it's a few ideas that I'm looking forward to. Speaking of which, we've already discussed a variety of potential Season Three episodes. I think the feeling right now is - at least for me - that we're finally nearing the end of a long marathon, as Season Two is about to wrap. However, after a brief break to recharge, I believe we're very eager to do the whole thing again. And this time take the experience from two seasons, and implement it for Season Three.

I'm off this weekend, including Monday. So I plan to have the first draft of "Revolution" finished by Monday evening. Tomorrow I'll be taking the time to go get a hair cut, so that I'll be looking presentable again. And that's pretty much it. I'll be back soon with a new update.

By the way, I'm seriously having trouble coming up with blog titles lately. Just take a look at this one. So I'm considering trying a new approach for my next blog. Perhaps I'll do a title in Latin. Keep an eye out for that.

Alex

Another blog?!! In the same week?!! Something's very wrong here!

Can you believe it? Two blogs in one week?!

Well, I promised to update this blog some more, and here I am. Basically I figured I'd keep you updated on how work on the season finale is going - without giving anything away, of course. I'm pleased to say that I've finished the first draft of "Preemptive Strike" yesterday, and it's looking quite good, leaving off at a point that should make the wait for "Revolution" one filled with various questions and, hopefully, some speculations.

It's interesting that very often when we break stories, and then get to the outline and script afterward, things tend to play out longer as we had initially anticipated. By that I mean that we might be breaking the story, and say something like that by the end of act one, character a will have learned some kind of startling secret from character b. And by the end of act two, character c will show up and let character a know that character b is in fact a liar. I'm not basing this on any specific episode, by the way. But anyway, then we might get to the outline, and realize it's actually taking us up until the end of act two until we get character a to learn some kind of startling secret from character b. So, we're an act behind from our initial planning.

Something like that happened with "Preemptive Strike" actually. Earlier we had agreed that we'd end the episode at a certain point, which is now turning out to be the first act out in "Revolution". That's not a bad thing, of course. It does make matters challenging, however, if you have quite a lot of story points to fit into a particular episode.

So right now I'm working on the outline of "Revolution", which is a tough one to figure out. The reason is there's just so much to juggle in this episode. Compared to last season's finale, the story is a lot more complex. And in addition, it's getting difficult fitting it all into this particular episode. I don't want to say anything with absolute certainty just yet, but it's getting so much that the term "90 minute season finale" has been mentioned once or twice. We'll have to see how it plays out. But one thing's for sure, we'll be doing what's best for making the episode as good and as memorable as possible. Most of you probably know by now that we've moved back the release dates for the final three episodes of the season. And let me just say, we definitely needed the additional time. I'm hopeful that once the season finale airs on June 29th, you'll agree that it was definitely worth the additional wait.

This week's episode "Catch 22" gets things rolling actually, as it kicks off the final four episode arc. "Catch 22", "In Times of Despair", "Preemptive Strike" and "Revolution" are all very closely connected with each other. "Catch 22" will bring the return of a character a lot of us have been looking forward to seeing again. We are very fond of this character ourselves, because he/she is just a great character and pretty complex actually, as this week's episode will reveal. So there's a good chance we'll be seeing more of him/her in the future. The episode also brings an interesting development for Lenori, we meet some familiar Tok'ra characters as well as a new Tok'ra character, and the ending will come with a surprise.

Well. In my last blog I promised I'd be giving some comments on last night's two hour season finale of 24. And what else can I say other than it was great!!! This season has been amazing. In every aspect of writing, acting, directing and production, this show is just fantastic. I'm always careful with choosing my favorite seasons/episodes, just because I like all of them for different reasons. So I'll just settle with saying this season is pretty high up there, and for those of you who haven't seen this show, and who'd like to see some unique and quite simply brilliant television... you know what to do. And what a powerful ending. Should make the wait for Season Six in January quite a difficult one, but I have a feeling I'll just have to go back and rewatch previous seasons in order to make it until January. In fact, I'm thinking about starting with that tonight.

Recently I've also started working on a story for a screenplay that I'm planning to write in the near future. Once the work on Season Two wraps, I should be making some progress, before getting started on Season Three. I don't want to give too much away, but I believe this movie should turn out to be quite an interesting one. I dare say it's a very unique concept, and I've even decided that it works much better as the first part of a trilogy. I do plan to bring this to the screen one day, actually. Just give me ten or fifteen years, and perhaps you'll get to see it. I'll say it's something that could be described as a philosophical sci-fi thriller. I've started reading Plato's Republic. A great book (written almost 2400 years ago) that's actually quite inspiring for this film. I've been wanting to read it (and others) for some time.

Anyway. That's the latest. I do plan on updating this blog more frequently from now on, so the next blog could be nearer than we all think.

For now I'll say goodnight. And until next time.

Alex

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://alex-sgh.blogspot.com/2006/05/another-blog-in-same-week-somethings.html' title='Another blog?!! Believe it or not, while in my last blog I was complaining about riding the bus, I can now announce that I shall no longer do so. Finally, Alex has got a car. It all happened pretty quickly, and quite conveniently actually. Here's the whole story in short: my grandparents used to have two cars; however, they decided to now have only one. So they gave one of their cars to my aunt, who in turn gave her car to me. And voila. That's about it. So we've kinda just been trading cars within the family, which of course is a nice thing to do. So, from this point forward, I won't be complaining about riding the bus anymore. From now on I'll just complain about the enormously high gas prices.

With a car I'm saving quite some time. As you might remember it used to take me pretty long to get to work and back. Now it takes about 25 minutes. Half an hour when there's a lot of traffic. So things have greatly improved in that area.

On Horizon we're working on the final few episodes of the season. Mike finished his first draft of "In Times of Despair", which is looking great. That will be kind of this season's calm-before-the-storm episode. We'll be having some nice character moments in a more quiet (but quite interesting) episode right before the big finale. "In Times of Despair" will see the return of some familiar faces, and we'll be picking up on a relationship that could have seemed almost forgotten. We'll be taking an in depth look at how two characters have/might/perhaps will again some day feel about each other.

Then, we'll be having the two part season finale. I'm about to finish the first draft of "Preemptive Strike", which is looking great so far. Lots of things will be going on, and we'll be seeing our team going on a joint mission with some familiar faces. I must say that the scale of this year's finale will be quite enormous. There's a lot going on, so much that it will be a challenge fitting it all into two episodes. I'll be starting the outline for "Revolution" tomorrow, and... I really can't say anything about it. It would be a shame to spoil all of those surprises.

I'm also quite pleased with the progress we're making in our visuals department. Here's an example of how our incredibly talented art department works. Today I was working on "Preemptive Strike" while a lot of us were on msn, which kind of makes it seem like we're all in the same "virtual office" with the doors open, as we can talk to each other whenever needed.

So I'm working on this episode, and I get to this particular scene. I pause, take a moment to think about something. Then I head over to the guys and gals, and I say something like: "So what do you think an Enoly space station should look like?" Then we talk about it for a few moments, and I outline the rough idea I've had in mind for the design. We talk some more, and I head back to write this scene. About thirty minutes later, one of our new designers, Michael, shows us all this wonderful sketch that he's put together. And let's just say it's an amazing looking design. Very alien, very Enoly. And there it was, an Enoly space station.

We all loved the design. And Nick, our CG artist who's designs for Horizon are just looking amazing already, has assured us that he's confident he'll be able to create a CG render of the design hopefully on time for the episode's release. So, keep an eye out for that.

I know so far we haven't had too much to show when it comes to visuals, but things are about to change. We have people working on Horizon, others are working on designs based on one or two specific episodes, and a very talented artist named Travis is working on some nice looking costume designs. In addition, we've just hired an additional concept artist by the name of Beth, who'll be focusing on creating alien designs, starting with the Draque and the Enoly. At the very latest when Season Three rolls around, we should have made a lot of progress. It only took us two seasons, but dare I say it, it should turn out to have been worth the wait.

We've also gotten in touch with another enormously talented individual. But I don't want to give any more away just yet, since it would spoil the surprise. I'll just say we're all very excited about the fact that this person is interested in joining our team.

Well. I'm about to call it a night. Tomorrow night we'll be having the great 24 two hour season finale. I can't wait to see how this will end. Season Five has been great! Really great! In my next blog I'll give you my overall view of the season finale - completely without spoilers of course.

I'll be back soon with another update. I promise not to wait too long this time.

Until next time,
Alex

The Return (once again)

Hey everyone,

it's indeed happening. I'm updating my blog again. First off, my apologies for not having gotten around to doing this as much as I'd like to. It's not that I don't think of it, or don't want to do it, it's quite simply a matter of time. But, here I am once more.

On Horizon we're working on the last few episodes of the season. Things are looking good, even though the schedule is getting tighter and tighter. But, that's normal when heading toward the end of a season. I'm still working on "Journalist's Day" actually. This one has been quite a challenge. We had talked about doing an episode that's told completely from Zach's point of view early on in the season. And initially the episode was actually supposed to go in a very different direction as it ended up doing. The first concepts actually made it kind of our version of the SG-1 episode "Heroes". There were a few parallels with regard to what it was all about. But, for reasons too elaborate to go into, it didn't work out that way. In short: the story just wasn't working. So, we started from scratch.

What's now "Journalist's Day" is still similar in concept to what we initially had talked about doing, but the story is very different. It's a fun episode, very light hearted in many places. I had a lot of fun writing what might turn out being some of Zach's most memorable lines from this season. There's a really fun scene with Christine and Zach, which involves Christine being dressed in a bathrobe. Nope. Not going any more into that. You'll have to check out the episode for details. The episode also introduces an interesting new character on Horizon. Let's just say, he spends a lot of time in the Mess Hall. And, Zach gets to hide in someone's closet in this episode.

All in all "Journalist's Day" is a fun episode. And, at the same time quite a challenge to write - a fun challenge, though. I'm still struggling with getting the fifth act to work, but it should turn out quite well. Then, I'll finally be able to turn in the first draft, as everyone has already been eager to see it. This one's kind of a last minute deal. Fortunately it's not like that with all episodes.

Vincent just finished the first draft of his first episode, "Aversion". You can expect some great Tom and Lenori moments in this one. Quite a big episode for both of them. Mike is working on his fifth script for this season: "In Times of Despair", the episode that in many ways sets up the big season finale. Some great character moments for a lot of our characters in this episode. We'll see the return of some old friends, some old not really friends but not really enemies just yet, and we'll pick up on a relationship from the past.

Joe has finished his first draft of "Uprising", the Return of the Aschen story. He should be turning it in pretty soon. Looking forward to seeing it. This one has got some nice twists and turns in it as well. Can't really say any more about it just yet, only that both Elin and Seeta will be back. But on who's side will they be on this time?

We've broken the first part of the season finale. We'll be breaking part two shortly. I've started on the outline for part one, while still working on "Journalist's Day" and pretty much every other episode in production.

And, we're FINALLY making some progress in the visual department as well. We've got not one, but three new designers on the team who will be joining Peter in creating designs for future episodes. Nick is our new CG artist. You can find an impressive sample of his work on the GateWorld Horizon Forum. He's working on the Horizon interiors and exteriors. From the conversations we've had so far, this should be quite amazing. He's got some great ideas for how to approach what will become typical Vorian architecture. Then we've got two new concept artists, Michael and Travis. Michael will start off with tackling Vorian architecture in terms of the Vorian home world. Travis will be working on costume designs, starting off with the Horizon uniforms. He's already expressed interest in working on some ship designs as well. Looks like we've got great things coming up.

On other fronts, I'm still car-less, which forces me to spend at least 90 minutes a day riding the bus to work. And, because I love it so much, I'll also spend 90 minutes riding the bus back home. I just love wasting my precious time like that. Sitting in dirty buses, that sometimes might be ridiculosly late, or sometimes strangely early. Hardly ever are they on time, however. But it's fun. Just to think, the time I waste there I could spend with doing other things, like say... recording podcasts. Seriously. Okay. I don't like riding the bus, but I'm very eager to finally get some podcasts up again. The two I've done so far are only available on the GateWorld forum, since the files were too big to go on the website. But, they're available at least - although I'm aware it's inconvenient. For future podcasts, I'll be doing individual files for the teaser and each of the acts again. Just like last season, with one change: better sound quality.

After I finish this blog update, I'll be off to watching last night's 24 on tape. I'm usually off Tuesdays (except for every three weeks), so what I'll do is just save the episode for Tuesday nights, as I'll be less tired than Monday nights. Also, watching it on tape allows me to skip the commercials. They just keep popping up after every act break. Another change in my 24 watching strategy is that I'm not watching the episode trailers until after I've seen the episodes. For the first time in a while, I'm watching the show without having any clue as to what will happen next. Best way to watch it. And, boy, have there been a lot of twists going on lately.

Well, that about wraps it up. I'll try my best to update this blog on a bit more of a regular basis. What can you expect from this week's episode, "Convergence"? In one word: Super-Yusuf! You'll see what I mean. And, interesting little piece of info. During the production of this episode we weren't sure for a while if we should change the title or not, since the title is quite similar to the Atlantis episode, "Conversion". But Mike had ultimately convinced us that "Convergence" was the ideal title, and so we went with it.

And now, before I go, a little something to have made the long wait for this blog update worth it. A little surprise at the end. I'm a big fan of surprise endings, so here's one for you... I will now share with you the two final episode titles of Stargate: Horizon Season Two. Feel free to speculate what those episodes could be all about. Okay. You ready for it? Here we go. The titles of the two part season finale are...

"Preemptive Strike" and "Revolution"

Until next time,

Alex

The wait is finally over!

Nope. You're not imagining this, it's really happening. I'm actually updating my blog!!! I figured that today's (yes, today's) premiere would be an appropriate event for me to take on this amazing task.

It's very possible that by the time a lot of you will find this new blog entry, "Path of Revelation, Part One" will already be available, as we'll be releasing episodes a little earlier for the time being. Now, what can I say about the episode without saying too much? As some of you probably already know, "Path of Revelation, Parts One and Two" were initially one episode, called "The Chamber". Due to various reasons, that didn't work out, and the story ended up being expanded into a two parter (or a three parter with "The Devil To Pay"). There's lots of things that were added, but mainly in part two. Things to look forward to this week: some great moments between Colonel Grant and General Williams, a surprising discovery inside the chamber in Malaysia (as if the discovery of the chamber itself wasn't surprising enough already), a brand new Earth battle cruiser, the Bellerophon (some great concept art is available on the Horizon forum), and lots more.

I've recorded a podcast for this episode earlier this week. Yes, you've read correctly - a podcast! The podcasts have finally returned after about a year!!! I hope it will be up very soon. I'd like to release it with the episode; however, there was a problem with uploading it, and I'll have to wait for Sam to get back to me. However, you can expect podcasts on a regular basis from now on. I'll be doing my best to have one for each of the upcoming episodes over the coming weeks. There's so much to say about each of them.

Well, we're now working toward the end of the season. Things are going very fast. We're already outlining episode 2.22. Drafts have been or are being written up to 2.21. We're doing very good with regard to the schedule. Time has really been flying by. And while the second half of the season is just starting to air, for us behind the scenes the main chunk of work on Season Two will be completed in a mere matter of weeks. Then, some brief time to recharge, and... on to Season Three. There hasn't been an official renewal announcement just yet, but my various sources tell me it's looking very promising. What sources you ask? I can't go into that. Seriously.

24 has been pretty amazing this season. It's always great, and while I don't have any favorite season because I like them all for different reasons, I am starting to think that Season Five has been the most intense so far. I won't give away spoilers here, but I will say there's one twist following the other. And while it's always torture having to wait an entire week for the next episode, I keep telling myself that we need to enjoy this right now, as after May we'll most likely be waiting seven months again for Season Six. But of course there'll be the first five seasons to rewatch, and rewatch, and rewatch, and so on and so on.

Well, that's about it for now. It's late (or early actually) and pretty soon I'll be uploading the new episode. Can't wait to see some reviews, comments and reactions. I hope we'll be seeing some more detailed reviews (perhaps in the way people were commenting on the pilot). So, make sure to let us know what you thought.

By the way, a few weeks back I was hoping that I might make it to the Vancouver convention this week. Didn't work out unfortunately, due to the fact that I started a new job just recently, and wouldn't have been able to get the week off. But I'm planning too make next year work no matter what. Peter, our concept artist, is there this week. So, you can actually find someone from our little show up there.

Anyway. Look forward to seeing your reactions to the mid season premiere.

Until next time,
Alex

The following blog entry takes place between 8:46pm and 9:10pm!

I know, once again I haven't been updating this blog as much as I'd like to. Various things have been keeping me quite busy. I will be getting back to updating it on a bit more of a regular basis, even if some of the entries might be a little shorter than usual.

Lots of things have developed. About two weeks ago I was having a couple of days off from work, and so I went to do an elaborate writing marathon. I ended up writing "Night Terrors" in about four days, and now, brace yourselves, after I finished "Night Terrors" I started "The Adversary" at the same day. And I've set up my new personal record when I finished the first draft after two and a half days of non-stop writing. I was quite happy with how they had turned out, and after taking a couple of days before doing slight revisions, I had turned them in.

We're working toward the finale now. Episodes are in production up until 2.21, which will be the infamous "Catch 22". Originally the episode was shelved due to lack of time (it was supposed to be 2.11 originally), and we were having trouble working out the ending. After all catch 22 refers to a no-win-situation - so how do you get out of a no-win-situation? We're starting to figure it out, and while there's a chance most of our characters will survive this no-win-situation, it will come at a high price.

Vincent, our latest addition to the writing staff, has finished his first draft of the outline for "Aversion", the Tom/Enoly Story, which uses elements of a concept called Enoly Children Story. I'm going through the outline and will be adding some things here and there before Vincent will be starting the script. Meanwhile Joe has started work on the Aschen episode, tentatively titled "Uprising". Still waiting for Mike's first draft of "Amazing Grace". It should be done pretty soon, and I'm looking forward to seeing it.

On the 24 front, we're nine episodes into Season Five. I haven't seen last night's episode yet. I got in late from work, but it's on tape, waiting to be watched later tonight. Great season is all I can say. I've started adding to my soundtrack collection again, and while the majority of the at least fifty soundtracks (the original scores) I have are all in Germany, I've asked my mother to have them shipped over - I'll be paying for that. The latest additions are a Star Trek anniversary CD, containing music from various movies and TV shows; Star Trek 3 - The Search For Spock; Pirates of the Caribbean; and the original Batman soundtrack.

Now I'll have to wrap this up, as I'll be watching Boston Legal (William Shatner and James Spader are great). After that, I'll be watching last night's episode of 24. I'll also be grabbing some Blue Bell Ice Cream (if you're writing Stargate - no matter which series - you gotta love ice cream). I've gotten into trying out all sorts of new flavors. The latest one that I picked up yesterday is Chocolate Almond Marshmallow. I recommend it to everyone.

That's it for tonight. As promised I'll be blogging a bit more often. And I thought I'd just throw out that the premiere of all new episodes of Stargate: Horizon is now only four weeks away. I'm looking forward to seeing your reactions to the new episodes.

Alex

Blog Wars - Episode... Unknown (but either 29 or 758): Return of the Blogger, Part Two

Sorry for not having been around for new updates too much lately, but things have been quite crazy once again. I did want to stop by for a brief update on latest events. So, here goes...

I'm happy to say that three new staff members have joined the Horizon team. You'll be getting to know them a bit more soon. Two of them have come aboard as new writers, Patricia and Vincent. And the third one is in fact our concept artist, Peter. Looks like once new episodes start to air in March, we'll actually be having some concept art to go along with them. We had a big staff meeting today, and Peter will be getting started on two starship designs, one of them will be a new version of a familiar ship class, the other will be something completely new.

I've finished outlines for both "Night Terrors" and "The Adversary". Will be finishing the "Zach Story" outline this week. After that, I'll be entering a great writing marathon during which I'll be writing these three episodes back to back. I did some research on dreams and the different stages of sleep for "Night Terrors", which should turn out to be a fun episode. I like the concept a lot. "The Adversary" will be an episode in which Grant gets to do some great "action hero stuff". I know Kiefer loves doing these kind of things. And "Zach Story" will be an episode for Zach Hoffmann to shine in. But of course he always shines. He's Zach Hoffmann, after all.

Mike has turned in his first draft of "Convergence", the episode in which an old friend finally returns to Horizon. We broke the "David/Grace Episode" today, and Mike has started the outline for that one. Looking quite good. It's one of those "grace episodes", but with yet a new spin to it. Next in line is the "Tom Episode" which we'll get to breaking on Thursday, after which Vincent will be writing the outline and after that the script. We've been considering ideas for those other bad guys, who aren't all bad guys. We haven't decided on anything specific yet. And, we've been putting together ideas for the big season finale. And what can I say... this will be quite a big one. There'll be this one scene we discussed, and it will just be... I can't say anything more. Seriously.

We're five episodes into Season Five of 24. What a great show. Can't wait for episode 5.06 tomorrow night. I'm finally getting around to completing my SG-1 DVD collection. I picked up Season Four on Friday; haven't started watching it yet, though. I also figured it was time to add to the movie collection -- it's been a while. I picked up Batman Begins, as well as the soundtrack -- the original motion picture score. Great movie which I saw when it came out. In fact, I'm sure I mentioned something about it in this blog; must have been around June last year. Can't believe I've been blogging for this long already. Time just flies by when you're blogging. I love blogging. Have you ever tried blogging? It's great to blog. Blogging. Gotta love that word.

Well, I'll have to keep this entry a little shorter, because it's time for me to call it a night. Gotta get up early tomorrow and go do some work on that other job that I have. When I come home I'll be back to working on my Horizon-related job. That's how these things work. I'm still re-watching Season Four of 24 on DVD, by the way. But only two more episodes to go.

Oh, and I almost forgot (how could I?). We've renamed parts two and three of the mid-season three parter: "Path of Revelation, Part One" and "Path of Revelation, Part Two". So, it's kind of a two part conclusion to a three episode arc. Is it a three parter or a two parter, you might ask. I guess technically... it's both. Depends on how you look at it. It's relative... very relative.

Well, that's it for tonight. Until next time.

Alex

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://alex-sgh.blogspot.com/2006/01/blog-wars-episode-unknown-but-either.html' title='Blog Wars - Episode... There were actually a few reasons for that, which can all be placed together to form one main reason: time. My problem is really that unlike on Vorian, where you'd have 28 hour days, here we only have 24 hours, which every now and then just don't happen to be enough. These 24 hours do make for one extraordinary television series, though. More on that later.

Anyway, a lot of times I find myself going to this one place where I do some work, every now and then, and then get paid for it. A lot of other times, I find myself writing and producing Stargate: Horizon, which takes up a lot more time than people tend to think. As the showrunner you have a lot more to do than just write your own episodes. I'm involved with every episode from start to finish, which, you guessed it, takes up some time as well. And, then there are those times where I find myself being occupied with that certain private life, that entails things not at all related to... uh, any other things. And, this private life, that contrary what you've been lead to believe, really exists, has been going extremely well, and it might see a pleasant development in its future actually. Can't go any further into that, though, as it's highly classified. But anyway, those are pretty much the reasons for me not having been around as much as I'd like to lately. It's much easier every time I'm over on Vorian, where, as I said, a day lasts 28 hours. Last time I visited the capital city, you wouldn't believe how much I got done in one day. Those four hours do make a difference.

I figured I'd inform you that after long deliberations we've decided to shelf that Ancient/Santa Claus idea I pitched. We might pick it up some time later, but for now there aren't any concrete plans for it. On a related note, things have been very busy lately as the second half of Season Two (or Season 2.5, I guess is the modern term for it) is in full production. We're down to two writers, so I've taken on the task of working on three episodes more or less simultaneously. They're all in various stages of development, though. Since our mid season two parter has now become a mid season three parter, I'm hard at work at writing the script for part three. We've tried hard to keep it a two parter, but after finishing the first draft of "The Chamber", it became obvious that it just wasn't working. The last two acts of the script seemed way too rushed, and there was so much that couldn't be dealt with properly. So, parts of the last two acts have been rewritten, to have the episode now lead up to yet another nice, quite explosive cliffhanger, leading straight into part three, tentatively called "Path of Revelation". Part three is basically a strongly expanded version of what the final two acts of "The Chamber" used to be. Expect some interesting revelations in this one, and a conclusion which I believe will be quite... how shall I say, conclusive.

I'm also working on finishing the outline for "Zach Story" as well as outlining "The Adversary", which will be a fun stand alone episode in which Grant gets to show his tactical skills. We've decided to put "The Game" on hold, and go for "The Adversary" instead, basically because the feeling was that it was time that we gave Grant the opportunity to show himself from his "soldier-side", if you will. "The Adversary" will see him in a situation where he'll be depending on his tactical skills more than ever. Interestingly I started thinking about this episode idea while watching Kiefer on 24. We're still breaking the story, but it's looking to become a fun episode.

Meanwhile Mike is hard at work at "Yusuf Returns", which has been titled "Convergence", but we're still wondering whether or not that title would be too similar to "Conversion". Mike will also be working on "David Story", in which we'll be getting to see David's wife. And he'll also be getting back to "Catch 22", which once worked out should be a great episode to continue our Tok'ra storyline.

Oh, and I almost forgot to mention, I've been very busy today. I started the script for "Path of Revelation" at about 1pm this afternoon, and I had quite a writing spree. I finished act two earlier this evening, and I'm about halfway through the episode. I'm trying to see if I can break my record, and write a script in say, three days. Wish me luck.

Well, we're less than 24 hours away from Season Five of 24, which kicks off with a four hour premiere -- two hours on Sunday, two hours on Monday. I must say, not often does it happen that you get quite excited about something that's about to air on TV. I'm starting to have this strong feeling of anticipation, and, knowing what that big event in the first ten minutes of the premiere will be (the one that changes everything, as they say in the adds), all I can say is... wow! I'm still rewatching Season Four on DVD, I'm up to 4.14. I probably won't get to the end of the season before tomorrow's (actually today's) premiere, unless I somehow manage to watch ten episodes between now and 7pm central time. Hmmmm. Perhaps I should give it a shot, but if I stay awake all night watching 24, how will that affect my writing spree come morning? Should I give it a go? Have to think about that one.

I'm also watching Season Eight of SG-1 on DVD, but I'm only five episodes in. I was rather annoyed when I came to realize that I had purchased one of those sets that contain the one hour version of "Threads" (thought they had gotten rid of those by now). Now I'll have to send it this rebate that I got online, so that they can send me a replacement disk. I should probably mail that away soon, as it has to be done before January 31st. Looking at it from the positive side, at least I'll be having both versions of "Threads" on DVD. That is, once the replacement disk finally arrives.

Never mentioned this before, but something Joe Mallozzi and I have in common is our love for ice cream. Yup, that's true. Only that I buy mine in cute little boxes, as I have no clue how to actually make ice cream. But I plan to learn that one day. So, today, as I finished act two of the script, I was so proud of myself that I decided to take an ice cream break, before starting revising what I had written. The flavor was triple-chocolate, and I recommend that everyone try it. It's great. A blend of Dutch Chocolate, mild chocolate, and vanilla ice cream mixed with a rich chocolate sundance sauce. That's just what it says on the box.

Well, it's pretty late (or early actually). Now I'll be off, watching -- you guessed it -- 24. Of course. Other developments on the TV front include new episodes of SG-1, SGA and BSG. Some great episodes, and -- almost forgot to mention this -- some great new opening sequences for SG-1 and Atlantis. I must say, some of the best I've ever seen. We should be really grateful to have them back.

Well, that's it for tonight. Next time I'll be able to share my thoughts on the first couple of episodes of Season Five of 24 with you. Only about 18 hours away now.

Until next time.

Alex

Blog Wars - Episode 729: A New Christmas

Hey everyone, and once again I'm back with a new entry. I apologize for not having updated the blog all too often lately, as things have been quite busy. That being things related to Horizon, or things related to the pilot episode of this other show that I'm finally writing (no virtual series - if we ever see this one, it'll be on the good old TV screen... at some point... many years ahead), and completely different things, like this new job that I've started about a month ago. I'll elaborate on that if you're interested. It is the kind of job where I actually work tomorrow, but it's all good. Mainly because I'll also pick up a paycheck, of course.

Time has really been flying by I must say. Seems like yesterday when Season Two premiered, and, here we are, looking back at the first half of the season. I must say I was quite happy with how the episodes have turned out. I was a bit concerned about one of them while working on it, but I think, in the end, it turned out well. So, what can we expect from the second half of the season? Well, let's say we'll kick things off with the conclusion of the mid season two parter (no surprise there), which I'm currently writing. I finished act three today, and it's already turning out quite long. I'll do my best to keep the length contained, but I fear I might have to shorten some parts in the end, or, dare I say it, even sacrifice a scene or two in which case you'd see them as a deleted scenes. We'll see. It's looking pretty good so far. Interesting to be working on part two while seeing some first feedback on part one. I think the conclusion will be quite interesting, as well as surprising in some ways. I'm looking forward to having another Grant/Williams beat coming up in act four, which will kind of help us understand Williams' reasoning some more. The intent is to also give some more insight into both Grant's and Williams' characters, and to see how they both feel about the way they're now confronted with each other.

Speaking of Williams, not quite what we expected I'd say. To be honest, for some time we didn't quite know whether his character would turn out to be a Kih'Andari agent or not. I'll say that when I initially wrote "Judgment Day" there was no doubt in my mind that he was an impostor. But, at some point we started playing with the idea of what if he's actually the real General Williams working undercover? And, voila, here we are. He's had those Kih'Andari guys fooled all along.

I've also started working on the outline for "Zach Story". I've got it pretty much broken down in my head, and I've got it written up until halfway through act three. I do think that I might not have enough to go on, which is surprising because normally our episodes turn out too long, and not too short. So, I might have to add a new twist to the original story to have enough beats for act four. I can't say too much about this particular episode just yet. Only that it will be told completely from Zach's point of view. We'll be observing the events from his perspective from start to finish, which I believe should make for a unique episode, and it will give us some more insight into what makes this charming, brilliant, heroic, and seemingly invincible journalist tick.

Other stories in the works are "Yusuf Returns" and "The Game". The first focuses on Yusuf's return to Horizon and an interesting revelation regarding some Ancient gene experiments. "The Game" will focus on Grant as he finds himself in a bit of a unique situation, as he deals with the after affects of a rather unusual game. Both these episodes could be described as stand-alone episodes.

We still need a story for "Aschen 3" (NOTE: Title likely to change). It will be the third installment of the Aschen arc, which began in "Rise of the Aschen". We haven't decided on anything yet, but the plan is to see some old friends (or enemies) in this episode again. If you're thinking it could be Elin and Seeta (our favorite Aschen ex-couple), that might be a fairly good bet. We've also got both a potential David as well as a Tom episode concept (those are two different episodes), and we're thinking about doing a Christmas story arc next season. I pitched out the idea that Santa Claus could actually be an Ancient, living on Earth at the north pole, and that the Ancients invented Christmas for a higher purpose. Granted, it's too early to talk about Season Three, but I could imagine doing a season long arc, that deals with our heroes having to solve the mystery of the Ancient Christmas carol mythology which might be the key to not only understanding ascension, but the universe itself. The ghosts of Christmas past, present and future would obviously be ascended Ancients. In this event Charles Dickens would have been one of the surviving Ancients, which explains the origins of Ebenezer Scrooge, who in turn was an Ancient at risk of falling victim to the book of origin, thus becoming an Ori follower, which would have been devastating. I'm also considering that - that's if Atlantis would choose to incorporate this idea, which I'll pitch to Brad Wright, Rob Cooper, Joe Mallozzi & Co. once I get the chance - Christmas could be the key to defeating the Wraith. I'm still working on the details for that one.

So, quite similar to SG-1 using King Arthur mythology or Atlantis being based on the myth of Atlantis, Horizon would build a mythology based on what we know about Christmas. The arc would kick off with an episode where Callen wakes up on Earth at the north pole, and everyone seems to think he's Santa Claus. As I said, nothing's for sure just yet, and I'd appreciate knowing what the fans' take on this would be. So, post your comments on this blog, the forum or email me, and let me know: is this a direction you'd like to see the show take?

Alright, okay... maybe, just maybe that thing about the Christmas story arc was just a joke. So, don't be concerned. I was just kidding... maybe. I did actually post the idea as a story pitch in the writer's room forum, and it was interesting seeing the reactions to it, but I do think the majority of the staff realized on time that I was sort of pulling their legs. Did I mention it was just a joke?

Well, I've been watching Atlantis on DVD lately. I'm up to "The Gift", and have two more episodes to go "The Siege, Parts One and Two" before I'll be taking on SG-1 Season Eight on DVD. I've got one more episode of 24 Season Three to re-watch (I'll be doing that tonight), then I'll approach Season Four on DVD. Haven't gotten it yet, but I will do that early next week. Unless of course, Santa Claus will feel the irresistible urge to give it to me as a Christmas present. Same goes for Season Eight of SG-1, by the way. I must say, it's fascinating to have some variety in my DVD experiences lately. Instead of just continuously re-watching one show, I've been alternating between 24 and Atlantis these past couple of weeks. I'll also be getting the first season of Battlestar Galactica very shortly. But what's up with "Season 2.0"? Now I have to buy one season of one show as two separate boxes? It's incredible to see how these companies come up with ways of making even more money. Oh, well. Either way, it's a great show, and it's time to experience it on DVD.

Now I'm off to wrapping some Christmas presents. It's not really last minute, though, not at all. I do have to pick up one more tomorrow, but that's okay. Seriously. Especially because I'll get it at the place I'm now working at (with lots of discount). And after I'm done with wrapping tonight, I'll be watching the Season Three finale of 24 (great, no matter how often you've seen it). I'll probably be watching the last two episodes of Atlantis Season One tomorrow (also great, no matter how often you've seen it). Highly anticipating new episodes of SG-1, Atlantis, Battlestar Galactica and 24 - all in January! Can you believe it?

Now, I'll wrap up this entry with wishing everyone out there wonderful and safe holidays, and the very best for the coming year!

MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL!

Alex

Blog Wars - Episode 274: Return of the Blogger

Okay, first off, I'm still around, even though it's been a while since I last blogged (is that really a word?). No, I haven't been abducted by the Asgard. At least... not recently. It's just been kind of crazy lately. Lots of work on all fronts. Things like writing and rewriting various episodes, keeping deadlines and schedules (successfully), trying to get additional writers to join the staff (thus far with limited success), trying to get some designers on the team (let's not even go there), and a tone of other things, but sadly not related to Horizon or screenwriting in general.

But, nevertheless, here I am. And I hope those of my loyal readers who are located in the US have had a wonderful Thanksgiving! It's Holyday Season. I love this time of the year.

At this point we're almost halfway through the season. I've just finished the outline for part one of the midseason two parter "The Devil To Pay". It's looking really good so far. And, I can promise you, we'll be giving you one heck of a cliffhanger, leaving you with a tone of questions as to how in the world all that will be resolved. In fact, I'm currently asking myself the same questions, as we've not yet completely worked out the story for part two, which is currently titled "The Chamber". Let me just say, some kind of chamber will play a very important role. Once you see part one chances are you'll know what kind of chamber that is.

I can't give away too much, as it would spoil the episodes for you, but large parts of "The Devil To Pay" take place on Earth. We pick up on some events from Season One's "Home Front", perhaps we'll see Senator Connelly again. There's an election going on. General Williams will play a huge role (all I can say), one of our character's brother will make an appearance, and we'll get to hear/read Kiefer Sutherland saying the words "Mr. President". I make a point of this because he says that a lot on 24; so, he'll be saying it on Horizon, too. In fact, if we were a television show I would have already spoken to William Devane to ensure his schedule will have him be available for when we'd shoot these episodes. William Devane of course plays President Hayes, and he'll indeed be in both "The Devil To Pay" and "The Chamber". In fact, we'll get to see the oval office again.

We're also starting to plan out some more details for the second half of the season. A couple of episodes you'll be seeing with one hundred percent certainty are "Yusuf Returns", "Zach Story", "Untitled David", "The Game Episode" and "In One's Pocket". Some of these titles are likely to change. Toward the end of the season we'll be checking in on THOSE OTHER bad guys (but not all of them are bad guys actually). But we haven't even got a story for them yet; we'll come up with something, though. I'm sure we will. It's not like we have a choice after all.

I have to say so far I'm really happy with Season Two. Our latest episode, "Parti Pris", had what I believe were some powerful scenes and great character moments in it. From browsing through the boards, I came to realize that some people out there really think scripts couldn't convey emotional moments, or that they just tell you what happens. Definitely not on this show, I must say. In fact, the next episode, "The Cold and Distant Stars", will be similar when it comes to that. I think the episode has some powerful moments between Sivea and Sonak in it, and we'll be seeing good old Sonak from a very different side. And for all those of you who think we haven't really seen enough of Sivea this season, check out "The Cold and Distant Stars".

Following that, we'll have an episode called "Catch 22". This one will deal with the Tok'ra to a certain extent. Catch 22, in this case, refers to a no-win-situation, and let me just say, that's about how it's been feeling to work out this story. I mean, how do you get out of what is really a no-win-situation? And for those of you who wonder about that, and who've been wondering what's going on with Loral's eyes having flashed in a rather Goa'uld-ish way at the end of "Troika", check out "Catch 22". And after that, we'll be seeing the first part of the mid season two parter.

You've probably noticed that things in the art department have been going a bit slow. That's simply because we haven't found enough designers yet. I'm told, however, that the 3D model of the Valiant is making progress. And I'm hopeful that eventually we'll be seeing some more visual contents in one way or the other. Just keep an eye out for them.

I have to apologize again for being a bit behind on the Making Of features. Once things start calming down a bit and our schedules aren't all THAT tight anymore (which will be pretty soon) I'll start catching up. I'm looking forward to the Making Of features as well actually, because there are some interesting things I wanted to talk about in them. I think the good thing of having been a bit behind with them will be that we can aim for releasing them weekly throughout the mid season hiatus.

Earlier this week I picked up the Atlantis soundtrack CD. Some great music! Joel Goldsmith is just a wonderful composer, completely capturing the spirit of Atlantis. Speaking of Atlantis, next week I'll be picking up the Season One Box Set, and I'll also be picking up the Season Eight Box Set of SG-1. I was a bit behind on that too, but now it's time to finally get them. This also means I'll have to pick up the pace on my current rewatching process of Season Three of 24. Yup. I'm at it again. I watched episode 3.10 last night. I want to be fully prepared for when Season Four comes out on DVD December 6th. And in January we'll be seeing Season Five. Those of you who might have heard some of the rumors about what will happen will know this should be quite interesting.

On a different note (I almost forgot to mention this), I noticed that for some reason if I don't have time to post a lot on our forums at GateWorld, no one seems to be posting at all. Maybe it's just a coincidence, but it's definitely been very quiet on there. In general, we'd all actually like to see some more comments on the episodes. You wouldn't guess it, but it's great to see reviews - good or bad - simply because it shows you that people acknowledge that the episodes are there. So, come on, people. Let's see if we can get some more discussions going. I'm sure we can.

Well, that's it for now. I'll be back very soon, and keep you up to date with the latest developments on Horizon as well as my DVD watching plans. As I've said, I'll need to finish rewatching Season Three of 24, but I'll also need to watch Season Eight of SG-1 and Season One of Atlantis, and I'll need to be done with rewatching Season Three of 24 by December 6th, so that I can continue with Season Four as soon as it comes out. Wish me luck.

Until next time,

Alex

This is an all new blog update. It features a broad variety of topics, most of which are in some way related to Stargate: Horizon...

I know, it's been nearly two weeks since my last update, so here I am. And naturally there are lots of new things to report. One of them would have to be the interesting fact that birthdays just keep popping up in October. There's Joe Mallozzi, there's our new script supervisor, Justin McNeil, and there's Aaron Percival, the writer of tomorrow night's all new episode. What's it with October and Stargate related birthdays? Somehow I don't seem to fit in, because my birthday is in May. But what can you do? Happy Birthday to all of you!!!

And with the prospect of more cake around the corner, I'll let you know that I've completed the first draft of "The Fantastic Three." Right now I'm in the process of revising and polishing before turning it in. Okay, there've been a few speculations with regard to what this episode is about. I've already mentioned Patrick McKenna in one of my previous updates, and Patrick is indeed the actor who plays a character called Jay Felger. And he does a wonderful job with that. So, does the fact that I would mention him in relation to this episode really mean that he virtually will be reprising that role in "The Fantastic Three?" Hm. I think I'll let you answer that question.

The other member of this trio is in fact a female character. And even though this hasn't been officially released to the public yet, I've always had a specific actress in mind for that part. It's a role that requires someone who looks attractive, and who also has comedic talent. Hey, that's just the way the character is written. And in "The Fantastic Three" we'll be seeing lots of this character. The name of the actress this character is in fact written for, is Leah Remini. Some of you might know her from the sitcom "King of Queens." If you're not familiar with that show, I'd suggest you just type in the name "Leah Remini" to Google, and see what comes up. Then, feel free to speculate which character who appeared in only one Season One episode could fit her.

I've always liked what Leah did/does on King of Queens, so I realized it would be really great to see her as this particular character. Now, if only we could actually enjoy the fruits of our wonderful casting choices on television. In other words, it's a shame it's all only virtual. By the way, I'll be very concerned if you're still wondering which Season One character (only appeared in one episode) I'm talking about. Come on, how many female characters fit the description? Okay, okay, because I'm in a very generous mood tonight, I'll give you yet another hint, and say Chase will be very surprised and happy to see her again. So she and Chase have had scenes together before? Hmmmm. Well, I'll say the idea of sending her, Chase, and a character played by Patrick McKenna on a little adventure together is just kind of crazy.

On another note, I feel I have to apologize, because I'm indeed a bit behind on the Making Of features. However, it's not that I don't want to finally get the next one done, there's quite a lot of work lately (only speaking of Horizon). It's the point in the first half of the season, where we're working hard to keep our schedule. Some writers haven't had too much time lately, and currently it's actually our latest staff writer, Mike Coakley, and myself who are working on a great deal of the upcoming episodes. In fact, as I'm revising and polishing "The Fantastic Three" I'm already working on the outline for the next episode I'm writing, called "The Cold and Distant Stars." After that, it'll be all about working out the first part of the big mid-season two parter. Mike is working on the script for "Parti Pris" while being in the early stages of developing an outline for episode 2.10; potential titles for 2.10 include "Crossfire" as well as "Zero Option."

It's definitely a lot of work, but it's a lot of fun. I will admit, however, that it would be great to see some more people out there actually commenting on the episodes. Very often we end up having put so much hard work into it, and hardly anyone takes the time to let us know why they thought it was so great, or why they thought it was so horrible. More discussions are very welcome. It's nice to know people are following the series, but it'll be even nicer to see what they all think about the episodes, the characters, or the developments. The comments and reviews that do come in are greatly appreciated of course. I do think "The Fantastic Three" should get discussions going, just because of the unique nature of the episode. That is, I hope so. I think it's the first real comedy episode we've done, by the way.

The 24 Report: I'm still rewatching Season Two actually; four more episodes to go. Believe it or not, I've had some variety in my DVD experiences lately. Last night I watched an episode of the original Star Trek on DVD: "The Doomsday Machine." Great episode. I still love the original Star Trek very much, and I always will. Now that I've seen it again, I'm having the urge to watch some more episodes. Maybe I'll do that tonight. I've also been rewatching some of the new SG-1 and SGA episodes, and I was watching a few episodes of DS9 last week. But don't you worry. No need to break out in panic, I'm still very loyal to 24. Just watched it two nights ago, and I'll be concluding the rewatching of Season Two within the next few days. I'm also still very loyal to Diet Pepsi, by the way. In fact, I'm drinking some caffeine free Diet Pepsi as I'm typing this.

I hope you all enjoyed last weeks episode "Providence." Good old go through the gate, get into trouble episode. I think it's got a classic Stargate feel to it, and it's a great episode for Christine. You get to see clearly how her character has come a long way from the early days of the series, when she was said things like this being the first time she actually fired a Zat. I love seeing character growth like that. You get to see characters evolve and develop over the course of the series, and it's a great joy as a writer to explore characters like that, and figuring out where they're going in terms of developments.

Tomorrow's episode will reveal some interesting backstory of a pretty well known alien species in the Horizon universe. To see what that's all about, make sure to catch the episode.

And so concludes another blog update. Until next time.

Good night.

Alex

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://alex-sgh.blogspot.com/2005/10/this-is-all-new-blog-update-it.html' title='This is an all new blog update. Nothing special yet. However, one of the commercials had a very holyday-like feel to it. In addition to that, I realized that this year's very first movies that center around Christmas appear to be coming up very soon. I know you're wondering what in the world is he trying to say? I guess I've just come to notice how fast time appears to be going by. We're only a little over two months away from Christmas, and a week after that, this year will be over. 2006 and January will not only bring new episodes of SG-1, SGA, and BSG; it will also bring Season Five of 24!

Speaking of how fast time goes by, there's a big birthday coming up on November 4th. Major event. Don't tell me you don't know who's birthday that is? Of course you know. Come one, you'll figure it out. It's the date on which this lovely lady will celebrate her first birthday. She'll be one year old. They grow up so fast... I have to figure out what an ideal present might be. Who am I speaking of? Of course I'm speaking of Stargate: Horizon! Why lady? Haven't got a clue. But I figured if there's a term "sister show," which you might have heard before somewhere, shows must be female. Just like ships. There's no such thing as a male ship. Isn't it all logical? Of course it is.

To stick with birthdays. Yup, that's the theme for now. Today was Dion Johnstone's birthday. It's pretty late, and interestingly today will be over in less than a minute as I'm typing this. Of course you know Dion from...you know, Horizon. He's Tom, and you all thought he wouldn't be back. How did we have you fooled. I'm just kidding, by the way. Not the birthday part. I was serious about that. Anyway, do you want to know what's really special about this, and I'm sure you'll find this as interesting as I do. Today (by now it's yesterday actually; October 12th) was also Carlos Bernard's birthday. And he's our actor for David.

Now, just take a moment to consider this interesting fact, this amazing wink of fate, this incredible sign of the universe itself; not only do these guys share the same birthday, their characters on Stargate: Horizon share a very close friendship. Wow! I'm honestly impressed by this. It's like William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy ALMOST sharing the same birthday (they're three days apart I believe), but these guys have the exact same date. Granted, one of the two is a couple of years older than the other (just like their Horizon characters), but still... I guess if we were an actual television show, we would have had quite a party today. I wonder how we'd still get the work done. In addition to that, just last week was Rachael Leigh Cook's birthday. And she's of course our actress for Christine. And, as if this all wasn't already interesting enough, today, and now I mean today (October 13th) it's Sam's birthday!!! She's our supervising producer. And the interesting fact about that is, Sam's birthday is on the same day as Christopher Judge's birthday. So, today is also Christopher Judge's birthday! Of couse you know him as Teal'c. Some interesting trivia.

I know what you're thinking. Why is it that I seem to know everyone's birthday? I'm not sure, but since a few years now this keeps happening. I look at people, and I know their birthday. It just comes to me. It was a bit startling at first, but by now I've gotten used to it. You know, like the kid that sees dead people. I see birthdays. I'm seeing one right now actually... So, to sum it up, there are five birthdays related to us in one way or the other. One on October 4th, two on October 12th, and two on October 13th. That's a lot of cake!!!

Alright, now let's all together say... HAPPY BIRTHDAY, SAM! HAPPY BIRTHDAY, CHRIS! HAPPY BIRTHDAY, RACHAEL! HAPPY BIRTHDAY, CARLOS! HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DION. HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ALL OF YOU GUYS!!!

Okay. Lots of cake for everyone... Alright, let's see, what else is on the agenda for today's update? Something else? Could there be anything else? Very unlikely. What else could there be for me to mention? I can't think of anything, as these birthdays are some major blog events already. By the way, I'm trying to keep this blog interesting, unique, and surprising. Be honest. You never know what the guy (me) will be talking about when you click on that link that takes you to this blog. Other than 24 of course. Speaking of which, let's do the 24 report: I'm still very busy with re-watching Season Two. I've watched episode 2.18 last night. Six more to go. As usual, it's great! With regard to Diet Pepsi, I bought some on Tuesday. The regular caffeine free Diet Pepsi, and Diet Pepsi Lime, which does have caffeine in it.

Okay. On the Stargate: Horizon front... I know, you've been waiting for me to also through in a Horizon update. Well, we've got "Troika" coming up today. In my personal oppinion, it's a great episode! Big things will happen in this one. Huge things much rather. "Troika" is a big arc episode, which picks up on previous developments, and which lays the foundation for future episodes. You'll see a very interesting villian character, who we think is great, and who has a lot of potential. I have a feeling at the end of "Troika" you'll want to see more of this character. Also, the episode might or might not mark the return of THAT OTHER character. What the episode definitely will do, is introduce yet another recurring character. A female Vorian character, who we'll be seeing a bit more in later episodes. She only has a brief scene in "Troika." We'll also see more of Chief Bay'lar and Zach Hoffmann. And watch out for a couple of insider references in this episode. Some names (i.e. planetary systems, colony name) might have poped up before somewhere in the vast history of Stargate.

I'm very eager to start writing the script for "The Fantastic Three." The outline is almost done, and work on the script will begin next week. I think this will be a fun episode. In my last blog update I mentioned Patrick McKenna, and some of you figured out who he is. He's a great and very funny guy. So, you think Felger will be one of the "Fantastic Three?" Who knows? Maybe I know...but maybe I don't. I'll say it's possible. Anything's possible. But who are the other two? And why is the episode called "The Fantastic Three?" All I can say is, the title clearly does not take itself all too seriously. You'll see once the episode will be here. Writing the outline has been a tone of fun; can't wait to move on to the script.

Well, it's kind of late now, but I had the urge to update the blog before turning in. So, here I am, in the middle of the night...typing. While others sleep, I type. But sometimes, I type when others don't sleep. Words of wisdom.

I'll be getting to the new Making Of instalments over the next couple of days. You can expect the one for "Connection" very soon, and it will be followed in short succesion by the one for "Troika." I'm eager to release those deleted scenes. There are two of "Connection," and one brief scene that was cut from the final version of "Troika."

Well, now I'll say, I hope you all enjoy "Troika." And I'll be back very soon with a new update.

I'll talk to you soon, and good night!

Alex

Greetings from me to you!

It's Friday, the exact time right now is 5:47 pm, and I figured that's a great time for a new blog update. Not that the fact that it's Friday or now 5:48 pm makes any difference. Just looking for a good first line to kick off this entry.

Okay. I thought I'd give you a little update on what's coming up on the Stargate: Horizon front. Two episodes of Season Two have aired; 22 more to go. Next weeks all new episode "Connection" is one of my favorites actually. While the opening two-parter had the difficult task of introducing the new season, and the new elements, "Connection" will be the first episode that really underlines the more "classic Stargate setting" that this season will see. Basically you could say it's a "trouble with the gate" episode. What kind of trouble, and how or if that will be somehow fixed, I can't tell you at this very moment. That is, I could...but I won't. I'm sure you wouldn't want to know anyway, since it would only spoil the surprise for you.

"Connection" will also feature the introduction of another new recurring character. This character will be another nice addition to the cast, and he'll bring along something that will make the show a bit more edgy, which is something we felt we needed to go for this season. Suffice it to say, he's not always on the same page as most of our characters are. He's not a bad guy, he just tends to look at things in a bit of a different light. Some of you might know who this character is. He's been cast with none other than Keith Hamilton Kobb from Andromeda. However, he has very short hair now. When looking at the cast, I find myself thinking it's a shame we don't get to see them playing the characters (other than the way we picture it of course). I think they'd each be perfect for their respective characters. Just check out the character written for Keith. What I really like about this character is, as I mentioned, that he's not always on the same page as everyone else. So, there'll be situations coming up, where we'll find some disagreements, and some debates over who's right and who's wrong.

Right now I'm working on the outline for an episode called "The Fantastic Three," and it's a great deal of fun. I think you have to love the concept of this episode. After having only the teaser and the first two acts outlined, I can already say it's definitely the funniest episode we've done so far. Knowing the premise, you'll look at the title in a whole new light. And to be honest, when I first thought of this title for that particular story, I couldn't help but laugh. It's great. I hope you'll enjoy reading the episode as much as I enjoy working on it.

Let me see if I can give you a subtle little hint. You could say the episode is definitely a sequel to a Season One episode of Horizon. That particular Season One episode had it's funny moments as well, by the way. And, if we were a television show, I imagine I would have already spoken to the great Patrick McKenna about this and that. Well, now you'll just have to figure out who Patrick McKenna is, and what he's got to do with Stargate. Then, feel free to speculate. As usual, interpret what I say in any way you like.

Other updates are an episode called "Parti Pris." Our latest addition to the writing staff, Mike Coakley, is currently working on the first draft for this one, and it's looking to become another great episode. I say this only because that's my true opinion. I'm pretty excited about the upcoming episodes, and the stories we're telling.

Things in the art department have been going a bit slower than expected. I feel I have to apologize for making you think we'd be having something visual by now. We hope it'll be ready soon. It's a lot of work of course, so it's understandable that the people working on it can't just have it ready over night. I do think it's worth the wait, especially since the CG models of Horizon and the Valiant will be the official designs for the station and ship respectively.

The 24 update: Have started re-watching Season Two. Am currently at episode 2.08. Have watched one episode per day over the last few days. Have again realized that Season Two is great. Will be continuing the re-watching process, and will keep you up to date on it.

Diet Pepsi: I love it! It's really good, and the great thing is, it's got a very low amount of calories. Isn't that nice?

Nutella: The same as Diet Pepsi, except for the low amount of calories part. But that's okay.

What else? It's now 6:11 pm. However, I was away for a brief moment because someone was at the front door. One of our neighbors. Isn't it fascinating what can happen during a blog update? It happend between the 24 and Diet Pepsi segment, and if I wouldn't let you know, you would have never noticed.

Well, I think that should be it for now. All viewers in the US, including me, now have the "pleasure" of enjoying re-runs of SG-1, Atlantis, and BSG. But, just think of the bright side: there are lots of all new episodes of Horizon coming up over the next few weeks. And I'll be keeping you up to date on the behind the scenes developments, along with 24 reports of course.

Speaking of behind the scenes, I'll be starting on the new Making Of installment tonight, to ensure it will be ready for release on Sunday. And I'll be getting back to "The Fantastic Three." I have to figure out a couple of upcoming twists. Once I've got those straightened out, the rest of the outline should be done pretty soon. Can't wait to get to the script.

Have a great weekend everyone! I'll talk to you later!

Alex

Premiere Week!

Hey, coming up with this blog entry title was easy!

Here we are. Season Two is less than 72 hours away. It seems only fitting to give you some insight into what exactly to expect with regard to the new season:

Season Two will start off with the big 90 minute season opener "A Time To Rise." This episode will see the return of an old enemy, the rising of a new enemy, and threats on two fronts. In addition to that, it will introduce new series regular, De'van Callen, as well as Zach Hoffmann, a new recurring character. As a lot of you know, we cast Dennis Haysbert and Armin Shimerman, respectively. We all think they're a great addition to the show.

Callen is a great leading figure, with an interesting background, which should be fun to explore. He'll make a really good base/station commander. Zach Hoffmann is...well, an interesting character as well. Zach is a reporter from Earth, and he reminds us that very often it does indeed take some getting used to being in space, on a space station. We'll see some "Zach moments," Callen will be faced with a serious challenge, two of our team members will be running into this old enemy, I mentioned before. That about sums it up. Well, not really. But it's all I can tell you right now. Hey, in three days from now, it's likely you'll already know what exactly is going on in this episode. That's if you read it right when it comes out.

There'll be a news release on GateWorld, and you can also expect a new installment of the Making Of series. It will be a bit shorter than the one for "Collision," but my plan is to do them on a weekly basis now. I'd love to do a podcast for "A Time To Rise," but I'm still having some trouble with the recorder. Does anyone of you know of some good and free audio recorders? If you do, feel free to let me know. Post a comment into this blog; I do check for comments. If I have a working recorder, you can expect a podcast audio commentary. That I can promise you.

With regard to production, I'm proud to say that last week I've set up my new personal record. I wrote the first draft for an episode called "What Comes Before The Dawn..." in four days. I don't know if I remember this correctly, but I think I also wrote "Rise Of The Aschen" in about that much time. Well, technically it wasn't four full days. So I guess I could argue if you count the hours together it was less than four days. Hm. Nah, four days sounds okay to me. How could I do that, you might ask. Well, truth is, I've had some extra time available, and I made sure to put it to use. I'm pretty happy with the script. It's a great story for Callen; it gives us some more insight into his character. The Season Two opening two parter will also be doing that of course.

A new staff writer has joined us as recent as last week; well, technically Sunday, which in a way makes it...uh, yesterday. Okay, maybe it's not as recent as last week. Anyway, his name is Michael Coakley. He's already pitched some ideas, so we'll have to see what you'll end up reading.

The art department is hard at work. We're aiming for releasing a surprise very soon. The earliest release would be Thursday along with the premiere, but if we don't have it ready on time, it'll just be a few days later. Okay, here's a little hint: you ever wonder what the uniforms on Horizon look like? Hm. I personally think they look great. On the CG front, things are making progress, but that might still take a while. But I think it will be worth the wait. We've made some adjustments to the Horizon design, and I think it'll make it look just wonderful.

Well, things are moving along quickly, as we fight to stay ahead or at least on schedule. So, I've now started working on an outline for an episode called "The Fantastic Three." The episode features the surprise return of not one, but TWO old friends. One of them was in Season One of Horzion, the other one was...in one or two SG-1 episodes. You add our own Major Reynolds to the mix, and you have The Fantastic Three. It will be a fun episode, and looking at the concept, it has the potential of becoming the funniest episode we've done so far. It's currently slated as episode 2.09. "What Comes Before The Dawn..." is 2.07.

With regards to other topics, I've come to the conclusion that I'll have to check out "Lost." It seems to be a pretty good show. Hey, it won an Emmy, didn't it? But seriously, a lot of people tell me that it's really good. Once I've seen it, I'll fill you in on what I thought. Speaking of great shows, I finished re-watching Season One of 24 just last night. What a finale! What a twist! I've seen it several times, but I still think it's great. For me, that's when the show really takes off. I'm already feeling the urge of grabbing that Season Two DVD set, and re-watching that season. Of course I'll do that very soon.

I never told you that I have a weakness for Nutella! I figured I'll just throw that in tonight. I've always loved it; it's great. Very delicious. So, you also know that I tend to drink Diet Pepsi or Diet Coke. Hey, I'll have to talk about something. Isn't that what a blog is all about? You talk about various things. I tell you what: why don't you let me know what topic you'd like me to address in my next update (besides Horizon of course), and I'll do that. Not sure what will come out of this, but I promise whatever anyone suggests, I'll address it...in one way or the other. You'll see.

Well, time to sit back and enjoy the evening. I'm thinking about starting Season Two of 24 tonight, but I don't know for sure yet. I'll definitely let you know next time. Right now, I'll say I hope you'll enjoy the Season Two premiere of Stargate: Horizon. I'm really looking forward to seeing the reactions to the new season.

Until next time! Good night!

Alex

It's me...the guy who lives in your computer!

Hey, everyone! It's been almost two weeks since my last entry, so I figured it's time to give you a bit of a heads-up.

Though first I'd like to briefly address a bit of a more serious topic, and say that our hearts go out to all the people affected by Hurricane Katrina, and the tragic aftermath. New Orleans is, I believe, about a six hour drive from here. My grandfather has actually spent the last couple of days helping out at a near-by church where some of the victims of this catastrophe have been taken. It's an event brought upon by nature, but that doesn't make it less tragic. But at the same time, it's been great to see how people have been volunteering to help those who have lost so much, and we've been seeing an incredible support from all over the world.

Now, with regard to some of the brighter topics, I shall let you know that the first three episodes of the season are all finished now. They're just waiting to be released actually. "Providence" is almost done as well; after some final and minor polishing, we'll be having another great episode at our hands. What I love about "Providence" is for one the fact that the episode has a classic Stargate feel to it; you could say it's a "Go through the gate, get into trouble!" episode. I love doing ongoing story arcs, and I'm very happy with the seven episode arc that concludes Season One. But I've felt early on when we began Season Two that we would need some more classic Stargate-style episodes this season. All in all (as I've said before) Season Two sees the return to a more traditional Stargate setting and feel, but at the same time the show is still the show. I'm very happy with how it's been going so far, and I'm looking forward to September 22nd when we'll be seeing some first fan reactions to the new season. What I also like about "Providence" is that it's a story which might make you think about one or two things; it deals with some very compelling topics, which I like very much. Although I think that Erik thinks I'm only saying this because I'm being nice (and I am such an INCREDIBLY nice guy, by the way; my grandparents dog tells me that every time I see him), the truth is, "Providence" is a fantastic episode!

Another fantastic episode is "Troika." If what I've seen so far is any indication, this episode will be great. Joe has been adding a lot of new ideas to it, and he's improved it from what we've initially had in mind for the episode. Let me see if I can sum it up. Hm...you'll see an opening which will shake things up for many episodes to come; not necessarily only Horizon-related, but with regard to what's going on in the Stargate universe at the time Horizon takes place. Then, this event will lead to the return of THAT character (sorry if I'm kind of sounding like Joe Mallozzi now, but I don't know how else to put it), then THAT character will play a role throughout the rest of the episode, and we go on a mission to save THAT specific XXX. But at the same time there's a b-plot going on, which in the initial version of the story was the a-plot, and it deals with THAT OTHER storyline. How's that for some vague episode info? As usual, you may interpret this in any way you see fit.

"Valiant" is coming along very well. Aaron has completed the teaser, and he's currently working on act one. Can't tell you much about that episode actually, except that the Valiant will appear in the episode...at least once...but maybe more than once. Who knows for sure? For those who haven't heard it yet, the Valiant will have a new permanent commanding officer in Season Two. Grant's defintely picked a great guy for the job; couldn't have done it better myself.

With regard to me, I've been extremely busy, and I've just started working on what will be my fourth episode for Season Two. Currently it's got the interesting working title "Callen/Son Story." Although I sometimes also refer to it as "Untitled Callen/Son," "The Callen/Son Story," "Callen/Son," or as episode 2.07. This is another story I'm quite excited about. As all but one of the working titles would suggest, we'll get to see quite a bit of our new series regular, De'van Callen. Let me share with you what I've worked at so far with regard to this episode: we've been kicking around some ideas, and Joe suggested something of which I thought it was brilliantly complex as well as great, with regard to the episode's back story. So, I've been spinning it around a little, and I've come up with an interesting way of approaching this specific plot point.

I know, you'd like to have some more details. Okay, here we go: right now I'm working on the outline, which is also referred to as "breaking" the story, because you break the story into a teaser and five act structure. I'm almost done with writing act one of the outline (the teaser is done of course). The way I see it, the teaser as well as act one will set up the whole thing. Act two will set it up some more, as we reveal this specific other thing, while the final three acts will deal with that thing as well as one or two other things. And in the midst of that, we'll see some other...how should I say...really cool stuff. And...there's a bit of a b-plot that I'm working on setting up. I love the idea, but I'm not yet sure how well it'll fit in, and how much of it will actually be featured throughout the episode. Boy, I'm giving away a tone of information today, aren't I? Alright, I'll admit it, I'm not really giving away all too useful information, I guess, but hey...it's something.

Okay. Now we reach the point in this blog entry where I speak of this specific topic of mine. Even now I can hear some of you saying: "Here we go again." But you didn't seriously think I wouldn't mention it this time, did you? Of course I'm talking about 24. Got four more episodes to watch and my re-watching of Season One will be complete. As I've been watching these early episodes again, I've come to realize again that it's quite obvious that initially the network had only ordered 13 episodes of the show. This is interesting in terms of how the story had to work for a potential 13 episode season, but it also had to be able to be expanded over a full season. Basically you have this big showdown in episodes 12 and 13, which - if changed around a bit - could serve as a conclusion to the season. Obviously the network had eventually ordered a full season of 24 episodes, so after episode 13 the storylines take a bit of a different direction. To stick with with my newly found fondness of referring to things I don't want to name as...uh things, I'll say that the first thing is kind of resolved in episode 13, while the second thing is sort of born out of the resolution of the first thing, while both things are still very much connected to each other, and in the end they're one big thing.Uh...yeah, that should describe it well.

Anyway, so in the middle part of the season, I've found there are a lot of set-up episodes (still great though), and as we approach the conclusion of the season, the show develops a new momentum, which makes the final run of episodes of the season quite impressive. And you just have to love that MAJOR TWIST that occurs at a certain point. Don't want to spoil it for those who haven't seen it. As it should be with shows, the first season is great, but from that point on it gets better and better. If any of the people involved with 24 happens to be reading this blog (yeah, right) good job, everyone! Same goes to the people involved with the Stargate television series (yeah, right; I think I'm lucky if two or maybe, just maybe, three people read this blog).

Okay. I think that's it for today. I don't want to bore you all too much. Next time I'll talk about some other...uh things, very interesting things, which will keep you at the edge of your seats. What these things are? Haven't got a clue.

To quickly get back to Horizon, I'll let you know that with Season Two we're planning to release some specials along with some of the episodes; i.e. more of the Making Of series; I'll be getting started on the one for "A Time To Rise" very soon. We'll also be releasing deleted scenes in the same week as the new episodes. Deleted scenes of course only when it's an episode that actually has deleted scenes. So far you can expect two additional scenes for "Connection" and at least one additional scene for "Providence."

I'll be back soon with more.

Take Care!

Alex

GateWorld Network!

Hi everyone,

I'm back to follow up this weeks big announcement. StargateHorizon.com has now officially joined the GateWorld Network, which will eventually grow to become an entire network of sites, all connected with each other and with GateWorld. Well, this was this mysterious "major announcement" which had been hinted several times over the past few weeks. It was hard to keep it from you all, but we wanted to surprise you. I bet some of you might have been surprised.

Well, with Horizon's new affiliation with GateWorld, a whole new group of audience members has been introduced to the show. So, I would like to take this moment to welcome all of the new fans out there to Horizon! I hope you'll enjoy Season One, as Season Two is only 27 days away now. I also encourage you to keep checking out this blog, since this is one of the places where occasional hints on upcoming episodes might be dropped. Not giving away any major spoilers (I could never do that), just some teasers, which might give you an idea of what is to come, and which will hopefully add to the anticipation. You can find the general Stargate: Horizon blog at http://www.stargatehorizon.blogspot.com. That's a blog which in the past has mainly been updated by Sam Jones, Horizon's supervising producer and webmaster, and myself. However, there might just be more staff members starting to update it very soon.

Me, I'll continue updating this little blog of mine on a regular basis. It's the place where I'll talk to you about Horizon, and every now and then perhaps about some...uh, other very relevant things. One of these other things might be 24, that incredible show that I might have mentioned one or two times in the past. Not sure right now. Could I've mentioned that before? Hm. I suppose I might have.

Anyway, back on track: I'm pleased to let you know that the pink draft of "Connection" has been completed. I'll be looking over that over the weekend, as it contains some editions from Joe. Speaking of Joe, as most of you probably know by now, there's been a little promotion. Joe Hodkiss is now the official co-executive producer on Stargate: Horizon. I've already let him know that with great power comes great responsibility, and that none of us are allowed to abuse these massive powers that have been given to us. At least...we shouldn't. And we don't. Really.

Okay. What else is new? Joe is still working on the outline for "Troika". I'm working on some notes and editions for not one, but two outlines. Yup. Lot's of work. "Valiant" and "In One's Pocket". I need to get them both done as soon as possible, to ensure that the respective writers of those episodes will be able to get started with the scripts. "Valiant" will be written by Aaron Percival, the first and only freelance writer this season; he also pitched the idea. "In One's Pocket" will be written by Horizon staff writer Marian Mijinyawa. It's one of the first stories that she has pitched. While "Valiant" is most likely the episode's final title, expect "In One's Pocket" to change at some point; it's currently a working title. And the episode has nothing to do with an actual pocket. That's all I can tell you.

I've had what I think is a great idea for how to continue a certain major plot thread, which will be introduced in the season opener "A Time To Rise". I'm still playing around with the idea, and have yet to pitch it to the writing staff.

Work on the 3D designs has taken a short break, as our head designer Vinny has been on vacation for a couple of days. He's back now, and we should have an update on Sunday. The plan is to have at least one major Horizon interior set done by the time Season Two premieres. With one set, I don't mean only one room, but basically one section of the station. So far Vinny has been working on the upper level, which is the control room, the gate room, the briefing room, and the office. The sketches and preliminary 3D designs look amazing!

Well, I have about an hour until SG-1 comes on. Can't believe it's only a few more weeks before Sci-Fi will give us this huge FOUR MONTH rerun period. I've stated this before, and I'll say it again: I think that's way too long for a break in the middle of a season. But what can you do? By the time the second half of the seasons premiere in January, the new season of 24 will have arrived as well.

Speaking of 24. I have to speak of 24 in ALL these entries; look at them as my signature. I'm still rewatching Season One, and I'm loving it. I'm up to episode 15. Just a great show! All of you who haven't seen it, I recommend you check it out! I think with rewatching earlier episodes between now and January I might just be able to survive the wait for Season Five. Not that I have a choice, anyway.

One more thing: ratings! Just like a television show, a virtual show can have ratings. That's basically the number of episode downloads, which we're able to track. And since the announcement of our affiliation with GateWorld...WOW! We've definitely set a new record! I won't be giving away any numbers just yet, but episodes have been accessed less than a minute apart from each other for most of the time. I can't say how amazing it is to finally have some more people out there, who might become regular readers.

I'll conclude this entry with letting you know that over the coming weeks there'll be a couple of releases (primer, plot info, special features, etc.), which should keep up the interest and the anticipation for Season Two.

That's it from me for now. Got some shirts and towels to get out of the dryer before Sci-Fi Friday starts. I'll talk to you later!

Alex
